To the Editor:
Like the rest of the citizens of Cape Girardeau, I have been following the current debate on riverboat gambling. What disturbs me is the escalating intimidation being exercised by various Christian organizations in this community. Why do these churches believe that just because a casino might open in this city, the people of Cape would flock to it, gamble away livelihoods and descend to a level of addiction that would destroy lives?
If we as individuals have absorbed and learned the moral teachings of our churches, the existence of a casino would not automatically corrupt our views. I, for one, resent the implication that I have not embraced the teachings of my church and that my morals need to be protected through intimidation and bombastic pontification.
If these same moral arbiters picketed and boycotted stores selling lottery tickets, as well as churches and other groups holding bingo games and raffles, I would be willing to lend more credence to their efforts. When it comes time for me to vote, I will draw upon my personal hopes for the future direction of Cape Girardeau as well as my own moral integrity, not the threats being levied.
