The Lenten season begins today. This is a time leading up to Easter Sunday when many Christians pay extra attention to fasting, prayer and reading the Bible.

It's a time of giving up something, all in the effort of growing in faith and one's relationship with God.

The act of fasting is Scriptural. Mark 4 notes when Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. Jesus said it this way in Matthew 6:16-18:

"And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

Several area churches will hold special events for Lent. These are good opportunities to participate.

Taking time to focus on one's relationship with Almighty God is more than a one-time or 40-day experience. Regularly spending time in God's Word, fellowshiping with other believers and attending corporate worship all are good things that help shape us.

We pray this Easter season will be a blessing to you as we think about the Lord Jesus' sacrifice, resurrection and return.
