The recent single-digit and subzero temperatures haven't been conducive to outside activities. Eventually, though, the weather will warm up and lead to more opportunities to enjoy outdoor fun.
A Jan. 2 story by Southeast Missourian reporter Erin Ragan highlighted several individuals who participated in an annual First Day Hike at Trail of Tears State Park.
The hike was part of a national effort by America's State Parks where free, guided hikes were held on the first day of the year.
Missouri received a nice designation last year as "Best Trails State" by American Trails, an organization that highlights hiking, biking and riding trails.
Gov. Nixon also has issued a fitness initiative, 100 Missouri Miles Challenge, to encourage the state's residents to get active.
It's a bit frigid to hike the trails these days, but warmer days are ahead.
Keep our local trails, including Trail of Tears, in mind. These trails offer a good opportunity for exercise while enjoying nature.
