Surfer uses struggle to encourage others

Many young people face adversities in life. As much as we would like to protect them from trials and tribulations, it's impossible to do so. From poverty to family problems to health issues, life simply isn't fair, and no one is exempt. Few deal with what professional surfer Bethany Hamilton had to face, however, and she will share her story tonight at the Show Me Center to conclude Southeast Missouri State University's 2015-2016 Speakers Series.

In 2003, at the age of 13, a shark attack severed Hamilton's left arm as she surfed in Hawaii. That's enough of a challenge to make most people both fearful and discouraged -- a victim of their circumstances. Hamilton, rather, relied on her faith in God and her family's support to persevere past the horrible ordeal.

In a recent phone interview with the Southeast Missourian, she said, "My hope was in so much more than myself." She spoke of the peace she felt, even in the midst of her trauma.

It is only fitting the Hamilton would choose to use her struggle to encourage others, since she, too, was encouraged my someone else's struggle. While in the hospital, she spoke to a man who lost a leg in a shark attack and then learned to swim with one limb. She allowed that to spur her on, and she, too, learned how to surf with one limb.

Hamilton returned to surfing the year following her accident and began to compete professionally in 2007. Now, she is inspiring others, as she was inspired -- a real-life example of paying it forward.
