HOW COULD the city allow the used car lot at the northeast corner of Caruthers and Independence to pave the slope on the lot all the way to the curb on Caruthers? Pave lot a problem

HOW COULD the city allow the used car lot at the northeast corner of Caruthers and Independence to pave the slope on the lot all the way to the curb on Caruthers? This is across from Central High School. There are sidewalks everywhere else in the area except on this lot. It is even difficult to park on the street along the lot on Caruthers and get out of your car on the passenger side. It is a dangerous situation.

Injustices against women

AS LONG as violence against women is recorded at the appalling rate of a woman battered every 15 seconds by a male, as long as females are treated like irrational, illogical beings, so long as the majority of female incomes leave them perpetually insolvent, there will always be those like me who will keep speaking out about the injustice against females. There may be a backlash now and then, but the battle for equality will never die no matter how many doomsayers proclaim it.

Baseball and smoking

SINCE THE Cardinals have announced a no-smoking policy at Busch Stadium, how long now before the men have to wear a suit and tie and it will be required for women to wear evening gowns? I predict next they will have priests selling Tootsie Rolls at Busch Stadium.

Leopold player was good

TO THE FAN who wrote in last week, upset about a player from Leopold making the all-tournament team at the U-High Christmas Tournament: I'm not from Leopold, but I did get a chance to see the tournament. I want you to know that in my opinion the player from Leopold, Chris Horrell, is a better player than any of the Scott City players. Do not blame the tournament committee for not picking any players from your home town. My hat is off to the people who picked the Leopold player for the all-tournament team. And to the upset fan from Scott City, better luck next year.

Players too rough

I WITNESSED a rather shocking incident at a high school basketball game. A player from a visiting team took his fist, obviously on purpose, and slammed in between the legs of the player he was guarding. What was most amazing was the referee just stood there and shrugged his shoulder about it. This was just one of many incidents of obvious aggressiveness, for short of a better word, that was either not seen or totally ignored. What is going on here? This stuff is getting way out of hand. I am getting sick and tired of this. If that was my kid out there, let me tell you something, I would march right up there and grab hold of the jerk that did that and take his matters in my own hands. I don't know what all the answers are, but surely we can do better than this. I know refereeing a game has to be harder than it looks, but they are getting paid to do a job. It is their role and responsibility to keep this kind of thing down by being in control over these kids. One of these days there's going to be a riot over this stuff, and it isn't going to be funny.

Haitian sacrifice

I WANT to comment about this Haitian sacrifice. I see another American boy has paid for Clinton's payoff of the black congressional caucus. Another boy's been killed down there, and Ron Brown took $1 million in lobbying fees from the Haitian generals. Ron Brown is Clinton's internal secretary. This whole thing is rotten. I'm glad I didn't vote for Clinton. This just ridiculous. These American boys are paying for his political payoffs.

Who takes Medicaid?

I AM a Cape Girardeau resident, and I get Medicaid. I'd like to know why no one in the Cape Girardeau vicinity accepts Medicaid, but yet we get Medicaid. Why get it if we can't use it. I have children who get sick, and the only place I can take them is to a hospital. It's not a real emergency, but they need to be seen. Is it the money that these physicians are worried about, or is it the people that they're worried about? I think it's just the wallet they're worried about, not the people.

Justice is questioned

WHAT IS wrong with this picture? A 3-year-old child is kicked across the room like a football, and his murderer is convicted and is allowed to plea bargain and only get a seven-year prison term. Another criminal is convicted of burglary and attempted rape. He gets 15 years for the burglary and 25 years for the attempted rape. Evidently, stealing one's property and attempting to rape someone is considered a worse crime than murdering an innocent child. What does this say about our judicial system?

Slow mail delays payment

I HAVE just received my bill from the city, and there was a $3.91 late charge. I found that my bill which I mailed on Dec. 29 did not reach the city office until Jan. 9, which is a total of 11 days. It was due by Jan. 4. It's amazing to take 11 days for a letter to cross Cape Girardeau. I would think that we would have better service than that, but I guess we're back to the pony express in Cape Girardeau.

Confident with Clinton

I FEEL confidence and satisfaction with Bill Clinton in the White House, because I have seen what the Republican party does when they are in power. I have been through the Coolidge, the Harding, the Eisenhower, the Hoover and Dewey days and a lot more, including Reagan and Bush. It always comes out the same: a mess. There are a few Republicans who would do better, but they have to stick with the grand old party. I would change it just a little to the greedy old party.

Needs pigeon help

I'D LIKE to have some information from somebody to combat a huge flock of pigeons down here in the corner of 300 block of South Middle and Morgan Oak. They're getting to be worse. They're fowling the ground around our houses. They're a nuisance. The city came down here one time, looked at it for a minute and gave me a sheet of paper and said OK, here you go. Evidently, they don't care what kind of stuff that our people have to put up with down here.

Who needs used clothing?

I HAVE some used clothes I was wanting to get rid of, and someone told me there's a place in Cape that takes donations and gives the clothes away to the poor. If anyone knows, I'd like the information.
