Total respect for firearms

WHEN I see all the shootings in the paper and on TV, I always think of my old friend who had an answer for all of it. Arms should not be allowed anywhere in a car but in a trunk and locked in a case with a trigger lock on it. He felt if you had the arms in the home, that was your own problem. But if it got out of the house, they should automatically give the man 10 years in the penitentiary for illegal transportation. He felt that any hunting gun should be only one shot. He said that anybody who didn't take any better shot than that didn't deserve to have what they were shooting at. Now he was an outdoorsman, and he was very, very good with a gun. In fact, he could throw up walnuts and shoot them with a rifle. I think his opinion of the gun is a lot better than what is being offered now.

Who can tell, under all that sauce?

GARY RUST'S column recently made reference to a Republican barbecue. I have attended barbecues given by all political parties, and I'm here to testify that Republican barbecue is no higher on the hog than the barbecue given by any political party. To tell you the truth, the animal rights party's barbecue was the worst because all we got was buns and sauce.

Appreciation for police officers

I'M CALLING in response to a Speak Out caller who said the police department wasn't doing enough to clean up the drugs in certain parts of town. It may have taken a long time for that drug bust, but we don't know what kind of evidence the police officers had to come up with so that when they finally got to go to court, the charges would stick and these people wouldn't get off because of some technicality or something like that. I think a lot of time people are taking the police officers for granted. How many of us are willing to go out and get shot at for $19,000 a year starting out and put up with people who think all they do is drive around and eat doughnuts. I think that before you start to criticize someone like that, you might want to quit your own job and go try be a police officer for a while. Then maybe you can appreciate what kind of work that they do.

Control dog messes near playground

THIS COMMENT is strictly for the dog owners near Alma Schrader Elementary School. While walking your dog, please do not allow it to leave its messes on the playground or along the fence row along the street. Last year it was like playing hop scotch around there. Our children should be able to walk to school or play on the playground without having to step in your dog's messes. I took my children to the playground the other night to play, and I can see we're going to have the same problem this year. Please, if you have a dog and if it's beneath you to clean up after it, then please have it do its business in your own yard.

Agrees with comments about speeders

TO THE caller who called about speeders and drunk drivers. They are 100 percent correct. These laws are totally illogical. Just because you speed, somehow makes you a safer driver. I don't understand that. Why shouldn't they get fined and go to jail? I just agree 100 percent with that caller.

No speeders on this commute

I HAVE a comment on of the articles that have been written about all of the speeders in the area. I haven't seen the speeders. Where are they? It takes me over 20 minutes to go to work, and I don't live very far from where I work. I get behind people going 15 mph an hour everywhere I go including Kingshighway. I just wonder where these speeders are. I certainly have not seen them.
