I WAS excited beyond words when I saw the title of the recently published Paul Greenberg column, "Quotes of the week: Take your pick." Greenberg missed some good quotes

I WAS excited beyond words when I saw the title of the recently published Paul Greenberg column, "Quotes of the week: Take your pick." However, after reading the column countless times, I became clinically depressed. Greenberg failed to quote one -- that's right, not even one -- measly Speak Out comment.

Questioner at council meeting is cut off

I JUST watched with great interest the City Council meeting. I liked the explanation of democracy when they threw the gentleman who was asking about the tax base of the citizens out of the forum of the political arena. Because the university and the city want to do something, we as taxpayers are being bullied into paying exorbitant costs for the university. And guess what? I'm a taxpayer in Cape Girardeau. Do I get a transportation tax in Cape Girardeau? Yes, I do. Guess what. Taxes are taxes are taxes. They're taken out of my pocket, and they're coming back for more. The gentleman had a legitimate point. He was cut off. They are doing something between the university and the city and just ramming it down the taxpayers' throats just like the Show Me Center. It is not right.

Citizens speak up for neighborhoods

HATS OFF to Ms. Twiggs and Mr. Bonner who attended Monday night's council meeting. It is citizens like these who are willing to step up to see improvements in their neighborhoods that really make Cape shine.

Column captures American viewpoint

I JUST wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the column about the nation's No. 1 false friend by Donald Kaul. It seems that he has expressed this the way that the American people feel about it. I think he did an outstanding job, and we need more articles like this that tell what's really going on in Washington.

Keep classes on central campus

WHY DON'T they not spend money around the campus area and tear down some of the old homes and build a high-rise parking lot and a music and arts building on campus? This did not work with the nurses who were sent off campus. We had to go to St. Francis, and our classes were always amuck because people were late and couldn't get to the classes on time. I think is a travesty for students to have to come off campus to attend classes.

University should raise the money

COME ON, SEMO. I was shocked when I heard the news about your latest project. I hope the city of Cape has better sense than to even consider this ridiculous tax proposal for the hotels in the city. Take just a moment and reflect back on the fact that the Drurys were willing to donate property for the Show Me Center. Let's take this opportunity to slap them across the face with not only a tax proposal, but let's do it for the next 20 years. I think that the new project at the corner of Sprigg and Bertling clearly showed me that you had a little too much money during this fiscal year anyway. Is the final cost even in yet on this venture? I really don't mind if the university wants to do this River Campus project, but let's try doing it the old-fashioned way: Save up your damn money. There are a lot of men and women in Cape who had to do just that to get where they're at today, so we know this kind of planning does work. Please us some common sense here. If you can do this on your own, have at it. If you cannot, then plead with your alumni to donate the money. If that doesn't work, try saving the money. My father and his father before him seemed to preach that quite often. This may be a lesson you need to learn. I speak for quite a few people when I say we businessmen and women in the city of Cape would be very proud for you to have this project if you can get it done yourself. And if you can't, then maybe you don't need it as bad as you think.
