STEPHANIE MEYERS of Scott City recently appeared in one of the Southeast Missourian's "On the street" features. She was asked what she would like to see more of in the Southeast Missourian. At the top of her list was Speak Out. It is for that reason alone that I hereby nominate Ms. Meyers for inclusion on the Cape Girardeau wall of fame.
I AM an 18-year-old smoker. It was my decision to start smoking, and it will be my decision to stop. No one will change that. Instead of raising taxes on cigarettes, they should raise taxes on alcohol. Have you ever heard of anyone killed while smoking and driving? I think not. Maybe someone will take into consideration of what I am saying. If not, then I really do know what kind of voice my generation has.
I WOULD like to comment on the epidemic of children shooting children in our public schools. The news glorifies and praises the children by putting all these incidences on the news. Are we fools for thinking that children don't see this? Wouldn't it be a better idea to praise children on their good deeds and accomplishments on the news? Maybe this would instill better morals to our children. It would be better than showing children in body bags with their grieving parents at their sides. How can any generation become better if the generation before does what it can to bring out the bad instead of the good?
I'M CALLING to say thank you to the person who found the wallet at the Rhodes 101 convenience store on William Street. The wallet was red and blue, it had a lot of money in it. They returned it, and everything was in it. I want to thank that person and tell them God bless them. There really are honest people in the world today.
YOU KNOW loneliness can come in many forms. I've known people who had great lives, kids, a house and everything that makes life what it should be: fun, pleasurable. Yet they threw it all away for a cheap fling. I've known single parents who didn't have two minutes to spare, to stop everything that was important to them, to make time for their significant other, and their kids haven't seen them since breakfast. There was an elderly man who lived in a small, one-bedroom trailer a little ways off in the woods from where I live. I once asked him, "How do you keep from being lonely?" and in his school of hard knocks wisdom his reply was, "I live alone." I've often pondered what he meant by that. The man was 85 years old, and I've often wondered how many times in his life he had been hurt. Apparently once too often, yet he was one of the best friends I ever had. I have, and probably will again, uttered the words "I am lonely." And I am. Why, I don't know. My children love me. I'm a single parent. My parents love me. I am surrounded by people who care a great deal for me yet I wish to share my heart with another. Strange, huh? I can't explain it either.
WHAT IS the matter with the editorial staff of the Southeast Missourian? Don't you know what that Kenneth Starr is trying to do? That man is trying to eat away at our constitutional rights, the right of attorney-client privilege. He's doing nothing but going after the president because he's working for the tobacco company. He took $1 million from his firm, Kirkland and Ellis, which is defending the tobacco companies, and he is out there chopping away anyway he can and taking away your and my rights. Stop him, for God's sakes. Get mad and stop him.
IN CASE people don't know, the dump site for Happy Hollow has had buildings on over half of it for about 14 years. The site where the federal building goes would go is north of the Happy Hollow dumping grounds. So get it straight.
I THOROUGHLY agree with the comment in last week's Speak Out concerning attitude. I have only one additional thought to include. That is, attitude determines altitude.
I MUST respond to the Speak Out caller who evidently felt that the Impeach Dan Tallent vehicle driver must be a teacher. I assure he is not. You will find that the teachers of Cape Girardeau, as well as the students and parents, are overwhelmingly satisfied with Dr. Tallent's leadership. He is a good, caring administrator with vision. While no one likes salary freezes, Cape Girardeau's teachers are more than prepared to sacrifice raises, take the bitter with the sweet and be no different from the private sector, to quote all your advice to them. In fact, considering the dangers and lack of respect that these educated professionals face today, it truly saddens me to see you exhort them to "be positive and try and set a better example." This misunderstanding must be set straight. The fact of the matter is that the Impeach Dan Tallent vehicle driver has a personal vendetta against Dr. Tallent. It has to do with the fact that his son was suspended from Central High School while Dr. Tallent was principal. His son went on to graduate this year from the alternative school, which incidentally, Dr. Tallent supports. Please don't be misled in believing that teachers do not support Dr. Tallent. This Impeach Dan Tallent person is the one being unfair. He is being irresponsible. And, quite frankly, he is wrong.
I REALLY don't believe it's asking too much of Peter Kinder and Mary Kasten to read the bills before they sign them. And how do you like that feeble excuse they both gave? Don't ever believe it.
