Hold graduation indoors

I WAS calling to encourage the Jackson School Board to have graduation this year at the Show Me Center. I read in the paper that they were considering it only if there was bad weather and that a determination would be made by 9 o'clock Friday morning, which is graduation for Jackson. If they make a determination at 9 o'clock, how are the general public and all the visitors going to know whether it will be at the football field or the Show Me Center? I believe the Show Me Center would allow a lot more people to attend who don't normally come to graduation because of having to climb over bleachers, especially the elderly and grandparents. But also the air conditioning would be more comfortable for the visitors as well as the students.

Mother proud of her daughter

THIS IS referring to Deanna McCoy and the picture of her baby. To all you people in Cape Girardeau and the surrounding area, I don't know who all made you God. That picture was not promoting teen pregnancy. I'm very proud of my daughter. She stuck in there. She went all the way through school being pregnant, and she's raising her child. She's not on welfare. She's not taking your tax money. I'm proud of my daughter, and that baby was not a mistake. That baby was a gift from God. So whoever made you God, please sit up on your own throne and judge your own front porch steps and clean them out before you start cleaning out somebody else's. I don't appreciate it. That was supposed to have been so beautiful for my daughter that day. You all made it so ugly looking. I'm sorry to say I'm an American if that's the way you feel. She's not taking your tax money. This makes me so frustrated because you people want to sit and judge someone else. You're not in her shoes. You need to get on your knees and pray and ask God to forgive you for what you have done to that daughter and that child. They didn't do anything to you, and you all should not be hurting them. I'm proud of my daughter.

No electricity for well water

ANOTHER STORY about the storm. We were out of electricity for 55 hours. Living in the country, there was no electricity for the well, no water, no water to drink, no baths, no bathroom. I didn't have to wash dishes or do laundry, but we still have an outhouse. Thank goodness. My neighbor got up 4 a.m. to go to Schnucks to use the bathroom. Thank you, Schnucks. I think families with wells should have had electricity first for water, especially some families with babies and children. I hope AmerenUE gets the message.

Is this part of teaching?

IT SURELY is hard for most businesses, as well as Cape Girardeau citizens, to understand why it was necessary for Southeast Missouri State University to raise tuition. However, the dignitaries of the college were able without any outside input or approval to establish a new title at the university at an outlandish price of $118,000. Did we need this position to do what the college is there to do: teach? Someone needs to answer the question.

Stop the foolishness

WELL, I see Dr. Nitzschke is staying at the university to oversee the River Campus project. Is this a for-sure project? Jim Drury offered to pay half of the cost of a special election so the citizens and taxpayers could again vote after this project was originally turned down. But the city didn't go along, because it knew it would not pass. Why go to the expense of having an election when the officials do not have to follow the outcome? I think the college should stop at this point. It's looking ridiculous in everyone's eyes. That fountain at Kent Library is the laughingstock of most every citizen in Cape Girardeau at the expense of probably $80,000.

Support your children

PARENTS NEED to love their children regardless of their sexual orientation. If you a problem with your child's orientation, there's an organization called Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. Please get in touch.

Hold JHS event at Show Me Center

I WOULD like to congratulate all the graduating students from Jackson High School. I just read in the Speak Out where parents would like to have the graduation at the Show Me Center. I too have a graduating student from Jackson, and I would like to see the graduation take place at the Show Me Center because of the weather, because of the heat and because of the seating situation.

Old wedding information

THIS IS in regards to the wedding picture and announcements in the paper. Sunday there was one couple that was married in June of last year, and it's just now coming out. I will not read stories that old. If it's two or three months old, that's fine, but a year is ridiculous. Somebody needs to straighten something out.

REPLY: The caller has a good point.
