Don't take it out on servicemen

I JUST read an article where Roy Blunt wants to block the money to our soldiers even if they're deployed to Yugoslavia. I cannot imagine anyone who wants to block money to those who are servicemen, especially those going into harm's way. These boys volunteered. They signed a contract, volunteering their services, wherever it may be, to serve this country and to do the direction of this government. This government has reneged on enough contracts of the service people, mostly to the retirees, but this is to the men going into harm's way, and this is unspeakable.

Bombing isn't unilateral

I JUST finished reading the paper, and my comment is in response to "Sheer stupidity." Whoever made this comment should know sheer stupidity. It lives at their house and is their constant companion. Evidently he knows nothing about NATO, ethnic cleansing or anything else that is happening over there and calling it Mr. Clinton's bomb. Come on, get real. Get educated before you ever make another comment like that. Evidently you think Clinton decided on his own to bomb that territory without any regard or consultation from any other free nation. The same thing is taking place in Kosovo as it did when Hitler was persecuting the Jews. Can we as a nation stand by and watch the same thing happen now as it did then? I think not. Pull your head out and watch some TV programs other than the "700 Club" or listening to Rush Limbaugh. Pat Robertson only has two agendas, to down Clinton and to promote the Republican agenda and hatred toward homosexuals. That's all he ever talks about. If you can't visit your library and get educated, at least try watching "World News," "Nightline," "Face the Nation" or dozens of other non-slanted news commentary. In other words, get educated.

Thanks for the magic show

I JUST want to say thanks to the Show Me Center for bringing David Copperfield. I have long been a fan of his, and he was fantastic.

Chinese cover-up

PEOPLE ARE wondering about this Bosnian bombing situation, when it will be over. Well, consider when it began. Funny that this Chinese dictator came just at the time that this bombing started. Kind of makes you think someone was having the planes fly real high where you couldn't hit them with the missiles and act like there was a war going on so we could get this Chinese missile scandal and nuclear secrets they stole off the front pages. I bet you a nickel, soon as this Chinese dictator leaves, the bombing will stop and they'll suddenly say "Well, we don't need ground troops. We've been able to do what we want with high-flying bombers."

It's what you'd expect

A FEW months ago I called Speak Out and gave my opinion why Cape Girardeau shouldn't be able to bend the rules and be called a metropolitan area. You redneck ridge runners and swamp rats just proved my contention. Your vote on the right to carry concealed arms was exactly what you'd expect from a bunch of reconstructed rebels and not the action of a group of socially mature people. I lived in a county in central Illinois about the same population as Cape County. In 1996, they had the first shooting death in over 40 years. You sure as heck don't have a record like that here. Guns don't belong out on the street. The NRA wouldn't allow guns to be carried into their national convention. Their actions speak much louder than their words.

Bless the Wingos

I HAVE a 10-year-old daughter who's autistic, and I just want to say bless the Wingos for everything they're trying to do for their son. Had I known about this therapy they're offering for their son, maybe my daughter would have been one of those kids who had a chance. I hope the Cape Girardeau School District is learning a lot. It's very sad that so many children have been lost for so long, and I just hope that they can utilize this information to help all the other children. My daughter lost her chance.

Very upsetting decision

I HAVE just read the Southeast Missourian articles about the little autistic boy named Elijah, and I wanted to voice my opinion. I can't understand if there's already state money already set aside for this child and other children who have autism to get this type of therapy, why the school won't just help this little boy. It appears to me from reading this, it wouldn't cost the school district anything, but it would give this little kid a chance. I just don't understand why anyone would stand in the way of one little boy. This is very upsetting to me.

Sick and tired of taxes

THE ONLY thing I can say is hooray for Jim Drury on his lawsuit. The people of Cape Girardeau are sick and tired of taxes everywhere you turn. If you don't believe that taxes are high in Cape, look at some of the houses that are for sale and the taxes on these houses. It's absolutely ridiculous the kind of taxes people have to pay in order to live in a decent, nice home. Enough taxes, enough taxes, enough taxes. Leave us alone.

Watch the dealer's hands

I WANT to comment about the Yugoslavian bombing that we're doing. This reminds me of the old western game called Three-Card Monty where the dealer would take three cards and he would shuffle them around and then you tried to pick the right one. They had a rule in there: Always watch the dealer's hand. No matter what happens, don't take your eyes off the dealer's hand. Same thing here. Don't take your eyes off the Chinese connection with that Chinese dictator over here. That's what it's all about. Keep your eye on Clinton's hands, because he's trying to divert your attention away from what he's done by giving our defense secrets to the Chinese, not selling or not letting them be stolen. They were given by the United States government and the president of the United States for money for his re-election campaign. So keep your eye on the dealer's hand, and we'll find the truth.

They could be twins

DAN BURTON, Al Gore. Al Gore, Dan Burton. Dan Burton, Al Gore. I can't tell the difference.

Taxpayers, take control

REMARKS MADE by Carol Carter were right on target as well as the suggestion by another about SEMO to get out of the construction business. One week, SEMO wants to lower the tuition for out-of-state students. The next week, they're raising fees. We, the voters, said no to giving SEMO money. But we were overruled by the gracious, giving governor who thinks he knows more how to spend our money than we do. The $4 million-plus that he's donated of our money is a drop in the bucket, so where does the rest of the money come from? From the taxpayers again. I salute Jim Drury for his take on this. Taxpayers, we need to clean house from SEMO to Jefferson City. All the money that they spend is yours. Send Nitzschke and Dobbins back to where they came from and vote out the governor. We have to take control again. The city has no business in bed with the university.

Give the man a break

IT IS apparent that the United States government does not have clear and effective foreign and domestic policies. Should that surprise anyone when for the past several years the president has had to defend himself daily against personal charges and efforts to stay out of prison? Give the man a break. After all, he is only human.

Worried about future students

WE HAVE always rejoiced that we had a university so close to us, and it is with great pride that we have seen some of our children graduate from Southeast. We're looking forward now to our grandchildren having this privilege, but I'm wondering with all of the increases that are occurring, is this going to create a financial problem that our grandchildren will maybe have to go out of state or to another school in order to receive the education they need? I know many colleges and universities are having to operate on a slimmer budget, but what was wrong with the university the way it was? I know it's great to have all these buildings and to be able to offer special and diversified training to our children, but isn't the primary reason they're going there is to receive an education? And this we support wholeheartedly, Southeast. Please take another look at it. Let's don't deprive children of attending our university here.

Take licenses of criminals

I AGREE that drunk drivers should be denied their driver's license because they are driving drunk and should be prevented from driving and doing a crime. But with that logic, shouldn't shoplifters and other criminals be denied to drive to their crimes too? I don't understand why only drunk drivers should be, or speeders who have more than one or two tickets. Why should the privilege of driver's license be taken away from the traffic criminals? My point is, why shouldn't they be taken away from all criminals? Basically, if you're a violent criminal, you have to drive somewhere to be violent, usually.
