I don't know who is in charge of painting center, left-turn and right-turn lanes on streets in Cape, but someone has lost it all or they have let their kids do the work. On Bloomfield Street west of Kingshighway, there are eight arrows going nowhere and three that run into each other. They did not need to put any lines except in the center. Its a waste of time, paint and manpower. Use this time to do well-constructed things. It is such a joke to see this. Come on, think. I'm disgusted...

Needless painting

I don't know who is in charge of painting center, left-turn and right-turn lanes on streets in Cape, but someone has lost it all or they have let their kids do the work. On Bloomfield Street west of Kingshighway, there are eight arrows going nowhere and three that run into each other. They did not need to put any lines except in the center. Its a waste of time, paint and manpower. Use this time to do well-constructed things. It is such a joke to see this. Come on, think. I'm disgusted.

Cover him up

HERE'S A good idea: Yes, indeed, cover up Rush Limbaugh on the floodwall. Get rid of a big problem. After all, we don't have Jesse James on that wall, do we?

A leap to the left

A SPEAK Out caller recently referred to Missouri's unfunded racial-profiling mandate as "autocratic Marxist communist legislation." It is my understanding that state Sen. Peter Kinder voted for the law. It seems extremely contradictory to his political philosophy, but perhaps he has taken a giant leap to the radical left. Assuming so, it will seem strange for us to have to refer to him as Comrade Kinder.

He was a Democrat

I'D LIKE to address my remarks to the items "Cover the portrait" and "Too much hyperbole." And you call Republicans mean-spirited? Those callers think Rush Limbaugh's portrait should be covered up because he doesn't deserve the status of Harry Truman and is a partisan political commentator. Harry Truman wasn't a partisan political person? I think he must have been. The only difference is, he was a Democrat.

Barking friends

THIS IS to all the dog haters out there. I'd rather put up with dogs than people like you. Have a nice day.

Crack down on vandals

VANDALISM IS a crime of cowards, With old Notre Dame High School, numerous auto windows and now Old Lorimier Cemetery being added to the list, I believe it is time for parents, grandparents and friends who are aware or have a suspicion of who is involved to report the names to our police department so they can do a thorough investigation. I hope anyone being charged with any or all of the vandalism will not fall under the juvenile laws of a slap on the wrist. And I hope the judge doing the sentencing has enough concern to stop future vandals by making the party or parties pay for the repair or replacement of each damaged item, along with serving equal hours in community service at the prevailing hourly rate. I hope that those in our community with the same concerns agree with the sentences as suggested.

Purse is returned

I WANTED to thank the person who returned my purse at Aldi's. I do appreciate it. Thank you very much.

Republican bias

I HAD to smile when I read about Rush Limbaugh's portrait being vandalized. I agree with the person who wrote in about Limbaugh's portrait on the wall. I objected to having him represented on the wall at the beginning. Cape Girardeau doesn't realize that there are Democrats living here too. David Limbaugh's articles I don't even care to read. The paper is so Republican, and no matter how many times we complain about it being biased, it continues to be just that.

No deterrence

IN REGARD to your article concerning Morley Swingle's use of the death penalty, it seems to me his challenge to find anyone to prove there are no innocent death row inmates in Missouri prisons was irresponsible. The proven fact is throughout our country's history many innocent individuals have been put to death by our judicial system. It's my opinion that just one person is too many. Sorry, Morley, the death penalty has not and does not deter violent crimes in this country. We Americans unfortunately enjoy one of the highest murder rates per capita on the planet. We are also one of just a few first-world countries that impose this barbaric form of punishment. I believe that one solution to the problem would be to privatize the penal institutions in this country. Make our lawbreakers work hard for their imprisonment, and do away with any possible parole for those convicted of murder. This would release honest, law-abiding citizens of some of the incredible expense in housing them.

Great contribution

TO THE person who'd like to cover over the portrait of Rush Limbaugh on the river wall: Rush Limbaugh is making a great contribution to our country by preventing the liberal left and political correctness from stamping out all of the voices and gaining complete control in American intellectual and political life.

We should be proud

THIS IS In response to the person that called in wanting to paint over Rush Limbaugh's portrait on the floodwall. I think Cape Girardeau should be very proud of Rush Limbaugh. The city ought to be proud of his portrait on the wall. For all those who aren't Republicans in this town, my condolences.

It's partisanship

I KNEW it would happen. I knew if I read Speak Out long enough, I could finally attain a great status in my life. I have officially heard it all. A recent caller said he felt that the Rush Limbaugh portrait on the floodwall mural should be painted over because Limbaugh was a partisan political commentator. The caller felt Limbaugh did not have the status of Harry Truman. I agree that Harry Truman was a great man. I feel that Rush Limbaugh has attained a great height in his profession, and he's someone people can be proud of. The idea that Harry Truman was not a partisan political person is absurd. But it does go to explain how Democrats feel about Republicans, and how Democrats are convinced they do no evil and claim the moral high ground whenever partisanship is mentioned.

Remove Truman too

THIS IS to the person who wants us to take down Rush Limbaugh's picture because we're not all Republicans in Cape. Well, we aren't all Democrats either. So let's take down Truman's picture.

Remembering Dad

FATHER'S DAY is a holiday celebrated less and less every year. But thank God I had a father who cared for me, my mom and the rest of the family. Although women's lib groups, homosexuals and many others think fathers don't matter, without them our culture is closer to paganism and moral disaster. His guidance, his decency, his love and his helping hand I will always remember and treasure. I thank God that he was my dad.

It's a nightmare

WHEN YOU look at our beautiful White House with its surrounding pretty green lawn, towering trees and gorgeous fountain with beautiful flowers encircling it, and then think of the debauched character Clinton and his wife who are inhabiting this revered capital home of our nation, it makes you feel as though you're having a nightmare. Then you hope you'll wake up and all this fiasco will just disappear. Let's clean out our White House in November and not allow Al Gore to continue these violations.

New battle cry

NO GAS regulation without representation. That should be our new battle cry. How can the EPA get away with making all these rules and regulations that are affecting our daily lives? We are being ruled by the EPA, which is not affected by the checks and balances system. This is clearly an illegal action on their part. Something like Al Gore taxing your phone bill so heavily. I don't know how much longer the American people can put up with this. All I know is, no gas regulation without representation.

Reasons for voting no

I'D LIKE to answer the person who asked what is the makeup of those people who are against the Jackson bond issue? I'm one of the ones who voted against the recent bond issue. I'm a 40-something mother of two children who have been in Jackson schools all their lives. My husband and I both grew up in the Jackson schools, and this is the first bond issue I haven't supported. It was not because the facilities weren't needed. The junior high was needed, but I don't think the new elementary school was. I also voted against it because of the recent land purchase for the new elementary school wasn't approved by the voters before they bought the land. I think it was just time to take a stand and point out the citizens were tired of not having their voices listened to. I went to a school board meeting myself before the election changed the board personnel. The board let me stay, but they did not listen to anything I had to say. They were not interested in what I had to say. They had their own agenda. I'm not being mean, I'm just speaking the truth.

Visigoths are back

THE SPEAK Out caller who said judges are amoral and no more than a necessary evil represents a radical and barbarian strain of thought not seen since the Visigoths sacked Rome.

Innocents in jail

THERE ARE a lot of innocent people on death row. That is wrong. If they kill somebody, and you kill them, you're doing the same thing they did: committing murder. There are a lot of innocent people sitting in jail who shouldn't be there. Something should be done about it.

Be reasonable

THIS IS to the city officials in Scott City. For those of you who sit around and make all the rules and expect everybody to know, we don't. You say ignorance is not an excuse for not knowing the law. But if you sit around a table and make up this 3,000-page city ordinance book, how are people to know unless they come by everyday to get a copy of each new ordinance you come up with? Be reasonable. If someone doesn't know the rules, tell them. Don't be writing tickets left and right for something you came up with overnight as a new city ordinance. Give the people who are ignorant of the law, as you so well put it, a chance.

They're not safer

I JUST read in the Southeast Missourian that MoDOT says roundabouts are safer and more efficient. Is this the same MoDOT that says Scott City doesn't have a problem with the intersection and getting off the highway? Do they think that's safer and more efficient too? Roundabouts are a bad idea. Bad, bad, bad. What MoDOT likes about them is that they're nicer looking than stop signs or signals, and they're virtually maintenance-free. Let's make something that's safer. Let's not have any roundabouts, and let's fix the intersection at Scott City. Come on, MoDOT, you can do it.

Safer elsewhere

SOME SOUTHEAST Missourian personnel seem hung up on the correct way to draw a swastika. That kind of comment makes me think it's safer to live in Sierra Leone.

Tunnel vision

DAVID LIMBAUGH is a sorry excuse for a syndicated columnist. He has a severe case of tunnel vision and can only write about Clinton and Gore. If Bush wins the election, poor David may be unemployed.

Garbage is ripe

I AM a mail man, and I have always wondered why people put their garbage cans right next to the mail box. With summer's hot days now here, that garbage gets very ripe. After smelling garbage all day, it makes you feel sick. Now I know what the garbage man has to put up with. Please, if you could put your trash cans anywhere but next to the mail box, it would be appreciated.

Do your own work

DAVID LIMBAUGH keeps challenging readers to come up with examples of things Democrats and Republicans do or don't do. Sorry, David, you got yourself into this column thing. We're not going to help dig you out. I know it's tough coming up with partisan political propaganda when we are all more or less common-sense conservatives, but you volunteered for the job.

Not a good idea

I'D LIKE to respond to attorney John Lichtenegger's letter to the editor regarding the purchase of the Jackson school property for the proposed elementary school. It may sound like a good deal, and in all reality it may be a good deal as far as the real estate development cost. But if I buy something I really don't need even though it's a bargain price, if I don't have the money to pay for it then I should never buy it. That's how I feel about this land. We didn't have the money for it. We didn't really need it, because we were told the existing schools could be added on to. I'm not saying that. I appreciate his opinion, but I still think they shouldn't have bought the land without asking for the people's approval. Without a contingency plan, it wasn't a good idea. If they're as smart as he thinks they are, then why did they do it? I think there's more here than is being said.
