Don't mess it up

I'M A senior citizen and have been around for quite a while. I remember when the program for the retarded individuals was first started, when there was just hardworking people with no money. A few hardworking enthusiasts who perhaps had children were interested in the welfare of the handicapped people. They got together and worked and worked, and some are continuing to work to bring a program like this to where it is today. Remember, they had no money. Today it's a fantastic program for giving dignity to the workers, and it gives a lot of relief to the entire family. Don't mess up a good program. Now I wonder why all the board members but one aren't talking. Surely if it's as bad as we're lead to believe, other board members would be talking.

Make the right call

WOW, TODAY when I drove east on Independence Street and made a left onto Kingshighway I actually didn't have to fuss at myself about the bump in the road. It is amazing what a nice phone call to the right source can do toward getting the job done. Thanks much. Now if we can just get the hometown folks to mow and clean up their trashy yards. I wish I knew what number to call to get that job done.

Cleanliness has its limits

WHEN I was a child, my mother said, "You have to eat a peck of dirt before you die." I was one of seven. We were clean, well-fed and reasonably happy and healthy. All I hear now is "Kill the bacteria." Does anyone realize that when you use these germ-killing products you are also killing the good bacteria? You are leaving yourself open to strong, dangerous bacteria. If you keep using these products, you'll end up having no immune defense. Check it out. Be clean, take precautions, but don't let advertising to sell products rule your life.

Post Office helped me out

I HAD a very pleasant experience with the Cape Girardeau Post Office. I had dropped a letter in the mailbox without postage or address. When I contacted the post office, someone met me at the mailbox and retrieved that letter for me so that it didn't get caught in the postage-due file. I thought that that was worth mentioning, since they seem to get a lot of bad attention. When they do something nice, they should get attention also.

Today's grammar lesson

IT APPEARS to me that an awful lot of people in their 40s use the word "fun" in the wrong way. They say, "Oh, it was so fun." You don't use the word like that. You say "a lot of fun," or "such fun," but never "so fun."

Daffodils send Easter message

AS I look and see the daffodils come up, springing forth new life this season, it's almost Easter time again. The daffodils represent Christianity to me. They come up and spring up in new life as we do when we are born again.

Try walking out

I THINK if patients go to their doctors and have to wait for 30 minutes, it's time for a revolt by the patients. Just walk out and see what happens. This is getting ridiculous.

Why believe her now?

DAVE LIMBAUGH was pushing a book by Peggy Noonan. In case you don't know, Noonan was the main speechwriter for the Reagan administration. She wrote the stuff like "We can cut taxes, spend more money for the military and balance the budget." David Stockman in his book said that the insiders in the Reagan administration knew the budget would not be balanced from the start. Limbaugh tries to pass off a Reagan hatchet-person who wrote speeches she knew were false. Now that she's doing a hatchet-job on the Clintons, we're supposed to believe her. Get real. If what she wrote before was false and she knew it was, why should we trust her now?

The laws of the land

THERE ARE some disparities in the laws of the land. Poor people go to jail for writing bad checks, while well-off people can charge up to their limit and just hope to avoid bankruptcy and not go to jail. Poor people have to drive a little bit more carefully to avoid a ticket. If you drive an inexpensive car, the chances are you will be followed more closely and are more likely to be stopped. We have experienced this when we've had used cars. I guess if you're black you have to drive a little more carefully. Let's face it, a black person is more likely to be picked up than a white. That's the same with the abortion issue. You may go to an abortion clinic. However, you just don't dump a baby along the lake. You obey the laws of the land.

Column causes concern

THIS IS for Tamara Buck. It's bothered me ever since she wrote that article on wrestling. I feel like she is condoning sexual exploitation and mindless violence. I'm surprised by her concern for children, although there are other articles she writes concerning the schools and children. This really concerns me.

Respect yourself, don't wait

I AGREE with the person who goes to St. Louis for medical treatment. I too have decided to pursue treatment in St. Louis. I receive high-quality medical care and return to Cape refreshed and renewed, not aggravated by having to wait endlessly in the Cape doctors' over-booked offices. I have never had to wait more than 20 minutes at any time when I visit three specialists that I see in St. Louis. Respect yourself. Your time is just as valuable as any physician in this town.

Try rationing yourself

REGARDING THE OPEC nations and high gas prices: How about everyone getting together and rationing ourselves? For about a month, don't travel like you usually do. Use one car per family. If you live in Jackson, shop in Jackson. If you live in Cape, don't go to Jackson. I think the OPEC nations would be more than glad to lower their prices if Americans cut them out like that.
