The way things are

A JUNKYARD has cars. A farm has cows. Thus is the nature of life.

Republican mantra

ON THE surface the state Republican legislators' mantra seems to be simply "No new taxes," a very popular stance and one likely to curry favor with the voters. However, upon closer inspection, their motto seems to be a perhaps more controversial: "No new taxes, even those that close corporate loopholes or raise sin taxes and even if the people of Missouri would like to vote directly on these proposals."

Real-world studying

I AM a junior at Southeast Missouri State University. I remember when I was in high school that study hall was not used for studying. Many individuals would read a magazine, write a note to a friend or anything to avoid doing their homework. I understand how much workload these individuals have. However, I think in some way it prepares them for college. There are no study halls at college. Many individuals take 15 to 21 hours of classes a week and work full-time or part-time jobs and still have to find time to do their homework and study. Welcome to the real world.

Proud of leaders

WE ARE so very proud of our Senate President Pro Tem, Peter Kinder, and House Speaker Catherine Hanaway. They are exceptional legislators. Their special-session speeches mirror and convey the taxpayers' opinions perfectly. Overburdened taxpayers certainly do not need more increased taxes to pay for bureaucratic waste. Gov. Bob Holden is not really fighting for the budget. He's fighting for political reasons only. He's a disgrace to Missouri.

Protect our peace

IF THE police would ticket and fine the parents of peace-disturbing kids at parks along with the owners of peace-disturbing barking dogs, it would stop these raging peace disturbers. Warn the parents and dog owners first, but if cited again a penalty fine should be imposed..

Purse is returned

I WANT to say a big thank you to the employees at Big Lots. I left my purse there. When I returned frantic about 10 minutes later, the employees had it waiting for me.
