On June 9, I witnessed the American Legion Riders escort Leston Morrison, 95, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, to be laid to rest at Bollinger County Memorial Cemetery in Marble Hill, Mo. The Legion Riders did a superb job of exhibiting the honor and respect that Morrison deserved for his service to this country. Helping others

As we approach an important election, we have two issues that we must come to grips with. 1. We must love God and follow his commandments. 2. We must love others as we love ourselves. You can't come back to being a Christian nation when the love of money and "stuff" is more important than placing the old, sick, hungry and homeless first. A careful study of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount would be a good place to begin.

Limbaugh book

After reading David Limbaugh's excellent summary of his new book "Destroyer," I think he might try to make a last-minute change in the title so as to give the reader a better idea of just how bad Barack Obama is and how he is using his superpowers in such a dastardly way. Instead of simply giving the book the title "Destroyer," I think it would be more accurate and reach a much wider audience if the title was "Barack Obama: Destroyer of Worlds." I think the inevitable movie would be better than "The Avengers "and all of the good-versus-evil movies combined.

Student computers

Full speed ahead for the Cape Girardeau School District on providing a computer for every student in school, although there is absolutely no evidence that the use of computers by students improves achievement. What is known is that this experiment will lead to a reduction in staff by at least four teachers.

Family fun

I recently attended the Superman celebration in Metropolis, Ill. This was a pleasant visit. It was truly a family venture with no beer being sold. Cape Girardeau needs to realize that alcohol does not have to be a part of every event. We have stopped going to the downtown events because of that very reason, and I am sure others have also. If Cape Girardeau wants to draw more people to downtown, a good way to start would be to make it a true family function. Metropolis and Paducah, Ky., realize this, and they have great crowds and a good time.

Obama, John Wayne

A top ranking House Republican was attempting to criticize President Obama by saying he's trying to behave like John Wayne in the area of foreign policy. I think that's exactly what we need. In reality I consider that kind of criticism a compliment.

Bush comments

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush said Ronald Reagan would not be in sync with the current Republican party's rigid adherence to partisanship and ideology. Bush is correct about this. The Republicans must surely realize it but have no choice other than to purge Bush from the party.

Union membership

There is a correlation between the drop in union membership and the demise of the middle class. Whether the former causes the latter is subject to debate. I say it does. David Limbaugh would say it doesn't.

Wasting tax dollars

I saw a big waste of Jackson taxpayers' money yesterday. We had a great downpour that washed away all the stuff off our streets. But while it was still raining, here comes the city street cleaner. Now who is in charge of wasting my tax money for this stupidity?
