Caring for pets

PETS ARE not disposable. Too many people take on puppies and kittens because they are cute but do not realize the time and effort or money that go into raising them. When you take on a pet, they rely 100 percent on you to take care of them. They cannot do it on their own.

Health concern

I HAVE experience with living near a limestone quarry, and I can tell you that residents on County Road 319 are right on. The air pollution is terrible. I had a chronic cough for years after I moved away and still am prone to colds and pneumonia. Those residents need to fight this tooth and nail, or life as they know it will disappear.

Too many deer

I'D LIKE to address the barking dog issue. I woke up the other night, my dog was barking furiously, because there were deer on the edge of the yard near my garden. Part of the reason that dogs bark is because there are so many deer in Cape Girardeau. I wish there was something we could do to control the deer population.

Squeaky wheel

STRACK EXCAVATING wants to build a quarry on County Road 319 just off Route K. How do you think 300 to 400 slow-moving trucks a day will affect traffic on Route K? It's going to be a dangerous mess. Don't let this happen. This isn't a little neighborhood problem. It will affect the entire region. Call your elected officials and tell them not to let this happen. If enough people complain, something will get done. The squeaky wheel always get the grease.

Unfair recording

THE ONLY thing I find unfair about the secret recordings made by Jay Purcell, Cape Girardeau County's 2nd District commissioner, is that the person doing the recording can select his comments and questions because he knows he's being recorded. That makes it unfair. If he's the only one who knows a conversation is being recorded, he can say what he wants and pull out of other people what he wants them to say.

Good issue of TBY

I THOROUGHLY enjoyed the May issue of TBY. All were exceptionally good articles, such as Dr. Parson's travels and the letter from Iraq. I think we can all relate to Kathy Greer's article about her experience with AT&T. I also enjoyed Paul Carbon's article about his ancestor and Judith Haneybrink's visit to the Follies. Thanks to all those contributors.
