He won't listen

IMPEACH THE president? The president's handling of the war has been atrocious. Many of his generals do not agree with him and will privately say so. His Cabinet is incompetent, and he won't listen to the advice of Congress. He shouldn't have gotten us into this war in the first place. It would be better to have just let this renegade nation be on its own and withdraw our troops. It is a civil war with brother fighting brother. Even those in the same faith are fighting each other. The few supporters he has left say he is resolute, but the vast majority think he is delusional. President Lincoln must be impeached.

Ready to go back

I SURE would like to know what troops everyone is talking about. When I was in Iraq, the people I served with were seeing real successes and, though we were all tired and missed our families, we felt we were making a difference. I'm glad to be back home, but I have already volunteered to return, as have many in my company. What tires us the most are the losers in Congress who are saying we have lost the war. My buddies and I would like to know whom we have lost to, because when we were there, we kicked al-Qaida butt.

Good care from VA

MY FATHER, uncle, aunt and my husband are veterans. Every one of them has used the VA medical system. We have never been more pleased, We can't see what the big fuss is about. What we've seen on TV and in the newspaper would be true anywhere. You can't fix everything. I think we are bashing the VA because it is the hot thing to do, and it is easy to do.

Using ethanol

MOST OF Brazil, according to National Geographic, is using ethanol. If they can do it, why can't we? It must not be a scam if all of Brazil is using ethanol. Americans have a hard time grasping new ideas. Unless there is a crop failure, ethanol sounds like a good idea.

Getting filthy rich

I have always been supportive in free enterprise. I have believed democracy is the best form of the government. But greed in the system cares nothing for the people of America. Deregulation was supposed to create competition and lower our costs. When the big companies buy the competition, they charge as they please. They control the product or service we all need, stick it to the consumer and get filthy rich. I am talking electricity.

Better than corn

ETHANOL MADE from corn is going to be a lot more expensive than ethanol made from many other things such as garbage, tree scraps and switchgrass. The day of corn ethanol will come and go pretty fast.

Caring for veterans

WHAT OUR veterans need is a medical card that entitles them to go to local doctors and hospitals where their families can visit and not have to drive miles and miles. Where local doctors are familiar with s veteran's medical history. All VA hospitals should be closed. Our veterans should get excellent care. They are our heroes.

Pitiful care

WE ARE hearing so much about the care of veterans. In 1978, my dad was in the VA hospital in Poplar Bluff. The family was notified that he only had hours to live. When we got to the hospital, he was in bed, unconscious with his hands tied, while several other men were playing cards in the same room. Dad died that night. I wouldn't take my dog there for treatment. That kind of treatment should be against the law. Free isn't enough. Prisoners get better care. That is pitiful.

More time

SO FAR all we have heard from this administration is "six more months" to give the surge time to work. Last year President Bush said we would know in the summer if this was going to work. Now it is September, then it will be November, then January. This sounds like a 3-year-old saying "I won't do it again." But he will.

Abortion decision

I WAS horrified by the op-ed article about the abortion decision. The author said he wants to someday introduce his daughters to the doctor who performed the abortion by stopping the hearts of their brothers. I hope that he never tells the girls that he and his wife decided to kill their brothers to give the girls a better chance at life. I can't imagine the guilt they would feel. Next to this article was the article by Norma McCarvy, who was the Roe in Roe v. Wade. She met the young daughter of a friend who might have been aborted and thought what a horrible thing that would have been. She subsequently became pro-life.

Post the law

I LIVE in Missouri, and I know about the law requiring headlights when you windshield wipers are on. I just come out of Arkansas on U.S. 67 and didn't see any sign telling motorists to use their headlights. It was raining all the way to Poplar Bluff. Half of the vehicles didn't have their headlights on. A lot of them were from out of state and didn't know the law, I don't know why they made the law if they don't intend to enforce it.

Original intent?

TELL ME (those of you who claim to be "original intent"-ers when it comes to interpreting the Constitution) how those who wrote the 14th Amendment (one designed to give former slaves citizenship, extend due process and equal protection of the law for them) intended that it be interpreted in such a way that big, greedy, multinational corporations could be determined by the U.S. Supreme Court to be a legal person? Can't do it, can you?
