Another opportunity

WHAT MAKES them think that they get a right to a second opportunity to vote when they couldn't figure it out the first time?

Need God's protection

I'M CALLING in response to the comment that the groundbreaking ceremony for the new high school was too religious. As a parent whose children have grown up in the Cape Girardeau school system, I have heard Terry Kitchen on many occasion pray over different things at the Cape Schools and have always appreciated his speeches. I don't think you could be at any kind of gathering that's too religious. I certainly agree with the editorial in the paper, which called it a trademark speech. Who better to have your children protected by than God. If anyone was offended by that, maybe they need to look within.

She'll do just fine

JO ANN Emerson had never been elected before the death of her husband, but she has been re-elected to her seat in the House of Representatives. Obviously, she is doing a good job. Otherwise we would have not elected her again. I think Jean Carnahan will do a fine job in the Senate. She has been involved in her late husband's political career, and I am sure she has picked up on how things work. She is an intelligent woman, and she will do a fine job of representing Missourians in the Senate.

A real litmus test

"HOW STUPID are the American voters?" one of your readers asked. They voted two times for Reagan and Bush, didn't they? Need I say more?

Show some compassion

I AM disgusted by the attitude of some Cape residents towards abortion. If you want to see an end to abortions, help stop the pervading culture of sexual violence towards women that still exists in our time. Help make family-planning information, adoption resources and prenatal care more accessible and affordable. And promote the concept of responsible sexuality. Calling a woman "selfish" or a "baby killer" from on high does nothing to solve the problem. We can't presume to know each woman's story. Show a little compassion, please.

Hang in there

NO, IT isn't that Gore is a poor loser. It's that he knows Bush wants to be president so badly that he'll do anything to get elected. To Gore and the Democrats I say, "Hang in there."

No need to complain

ALL I CAN say is if I were stupid enough to be told to punch No. 5 and I punched No. 4 instead, I would not complain even if I were a Democrat.

Keep the bridge name

THIS IS to the person who suggested changing the Emerson bridge to the Carnahan bridge. Are you trying to start something? That is an idiot idea.

Dumb plan backfired

DEMOCRATS OPPOSE education reform basically because more dumb people means more Democratic votes. It looks as though this backfired on them in Florida where several thousand people weren't smart enough to read a ballot.

Accept it like a man

THIS IS not the first time that we have had a situation where electoral votes overrode the public. I would think that Gore would quite crying and whining and accept defeat like a man.

If tables were turned

I JUST read the letter from Carol Baylor. I have an opinion myself. How would it be if the tables were turned and Bush was in the same situation. Would he be the president?
