TO THE liberal who thinks conservatives are rich. I am a conservative Republican, and I am far from being rich. I have seen more rich liberals than I have seen rich conservatives. The Bible does not specify whether the rich man Jesus spoke to was liberal or conservative, but since he refused to give up all he had, more than likely he was a liberal. As for the remark about redistribution of wealth, that is a communist view. It is the liberals who are trying to have God taken off of everything, not the conservatives.
SHOULD SPORTS be the heart? In response to a comment saying that sports is the heart of education, let us not forget that we are talking about an educational institution. Although sports can build certain aspects of that education, in no way, shape or manner should sports be the priority. Maybe that's where the general public is going wrong. The first line of business in schools is academics, not athletics.
EVERYONE'S NEW favorite president has suddenly got us in a heap of financial trouble. Not only is his outrageous tax cut not helping the economy, it has completely wiped out our surplus. We owe some $3 billion to the United Nations which will not be paid. When Bush is voted out in favor of a Democrat in 2004, everyone will demonize the new president for the ensuing, but necessary, tax increase. All the good things we enjoyed in the 1990s have gone in less than a year. Thank you so much, President Bush. Enjoy your power while you can.
DURING DAVID Limbaugh's harrumphing harangue on a variety of issues, he referred to "hollow" positions taken by Democrats on these matters. What he didn't say was that on the same issues many Republicans are starting to see the light and are taking a similar stance. Bipartisanship rules. Happy days are here again, except for the sinking economy.
SCHOOL-SPONSORED sports are nothing more than off-season programs for club and select traveling teams. If these programs and their championships add so much to a community, why haven't we all moved to Charleston or Scott County Central?
I WOULD like to thank the city for the construction of the LaCroix Trail. It seems this is one of the few things the city has actually done right, and it was done in the interest of its residents. Kudos. I only have one suggestion for animal walkers: Please clean up after them. It's bad enough they use the grass so close to the track, but even worse when animal excrement is actually on the track cooking in the hot sun.
THE BEST news I have read since the rape of the 2000 presidential election: Jesse Helms is leaving the U.S. Senate.
THAT WAS a good editorial about how the tobacco money is being spent. May I also make some observations? All this tobacco money is coming from people who smoke. The companies have already paid their lawyers with the money freely given to them by smokers. So any more money must come, again, from those who smoke. It is not in the best interest of the government, federal or state, to diminish the source of that money. In fact, as long as Social Security exists it is not in government's best interest for anyone to live long enough to retire. Any money coming in to the government's pockets is fair game for all politicians to spend as they see fit -- as long as it makes them look good.
I SEE where the city is preparing to resurface North Main Street from Broadway to North Street. We'd be thankful if they would come up to the 700 block and repair that street at Mill and Main, and please fix these dropped down manhole covers. This is hard on front ends of automobiles. You can't keep from missing them because there are so many of them.
YOUR EDITORIAL talked as though if the Missouri Supreme Court axes the River Campus tax that the money could still be held by the city. I realize I am on shaky ground, but if a tax is ruled invalid the money should go back to those who paid it. There I go again applying logic.
RONALD REAGAN and both George Bushes have made a yellow-dog Democrat out of me. Indeed, a proud Democrat.
DO NOT concern yourselves about what we liberals do and do not do. You have more than enough to do. As for me, I would rather be in a den of hungry rattlesnakes than to be in a crowd of conservatives.
