Revolution ahead

THE OVERTHROW of Missouri's state government would be unjustified, illegal and require a counter-revolution to restore law and order. The chances of that happening may seem remote to most. However, I think it is a distinct possibility if the Missouri General Assembly drops the ball and the Cardinals go bye-bye.

Circus is there

NOW THAT we have a T-ball area on the White House lawn, what next? A race track? We may as well. The circus is already there.

Hurting the workers

IT'S GREAT that Herb Nance is sticking up for something he believes in, but by not selling Chinese products he is actually helping the regime in taking money away from working-class Chinese citizens. When China's exports drop, so do the already low wages of the workers.

No say on execution

JOHN ASHCROFT'S comment that there will be no delay in the execution of Tim McVeigh may sound reassuring, but it is meaningless. Ashcroft is a member of the executive branch. He has no say as to when or if McVeigh is to be executed. That decision rests with the judicial branch. Surely Ashcroft knows that to be the case. If not, his comments were indicative of a shocking ignorance of his role. If so, it was political posturing at a very poor time. McVeigh may be with us for years.

Don't need gridlock

LOWER SPEED limits to 60 mph? There's enough gridlock now at 70 mph. Lowering the limit would just make traffic jams worse. Stop-and-go driving is much more wasteful than cruising at 70.

Movie comparisons

THE MOVIE "Quills" is about the Marquis de Sade. De Sade was a sick man, a sadist and a masochist. It would be crazy to bring "Quills" to Cape. Cape Girardeau is like the community portrayed in the movie "Pleasantville" before things started changing. Cape needs no changes, particularly the kind "Quills" would cause.

Elect some oil men

I THINK I know how to solve this gasoline shortage. We need to elect a couple of oil men to high political office. Or maybe that's the reason for it.

Instant lake

I HAVE a great idea. Whenever they get that new bridge built, they should take the old bridge, fill it full of concrete, drop it in the river. Then we can have a lake. That would be really cool.

People expect increases

GASOLINE PRICES are so high in part because the news media keep telling people that gas prices are going up. Since the people are warned that this is going to happen, the gas companies find it very convenient to go ahead and make this come true. People deserve these high prices because they drive like there's no tomorrow. So, why should we beat our heads about that?

Don't break the law

MY PARENTS taught me that the law was the law and it shouldn't be broken. I'm trying to instill those same beliefs in my children. With graduation season upon us, I have one big concern. Some parents feel that since the children are going to drink anyway, it's better to have drinking supervised. So they supply the alcohol and are there to watch them get drunk but stay safe. One big problem, if I'm not mistaken, is that supplying alcohol to minors is still against the law. So why do some parents think this is the right choice? We need to be strong role models and uphold the law and make sure our children do also. Parents, be strong and tell your kids no. Don't cop out and supply the alcohol just because you think they're going to do it anyway. Laws are not meant to be broken. They're meant to be kept.

Thanks for left turn

AS A resident on Park Street, I appreciate the left hand turn off of Broadway. Now I feel a little safer. Thank you.

DOES PRESIDENT Bush not understand the American people are concerned about the economy? He just sweeps it under the rug when he doesn't want to deal with it. You Republicans wanted this man. Be careful what you wish for. The way we're going now, in four years we'll be lower than a third-world country. This country is going down the toilet with all the Republicans. The Democrats had things pretty nice. Now it seems to be quite a mess, thanks to Bush.

Project Prom

HATS OFF to Notre Dame for providing a safe environment for their students after prom. Project Prom was a huge success. It was nice to be a parent and know my child was safe and having a good time. Thanks again for all your hard work and commitment to the safety of our children.

Different game now

THE HEADLINE read, "White House says it cannot keep gasoline prices down." The story said Bush has no magic wand to wave away soaring gasoline prices. Boy, what a difference a year makes. Both Bush and his political party had all the answers to what Clinton was doing wrong and what he should do to correct the prices last year when gasoline prices rose. I wonder what makes the difference in one year.
