IN RESPONSE to your front-page article on "Road age," I agree completely. I was driving from Jackson to Cape, and a woman flew by me. She had to be 80 years old if she was a day. She was driving way too fast. If she would have run a light or had done something wrong, she could have caused an accident. I feel for the elderly people, but my parents are elderly, and they should not be driving...

Too old to drive

IN RESPONSE to your front-page article on "Road age," I agree completely. I was driving from Jackson to Cape, and a woman flew by me. She had to be 80 years old if she was a day. She was driving way too fast. If she would have run a light or had done something wrong, she could have caused an accident. I feel for the elderly people, but my parents are elderly, and they should not be driving.

Ready to open?

THE NEW Hopper Road between Mount Auburn and Kage is a beautiful new street. It's been done for over a month. The curbs are in. The speed limit signs are up. The sidewalks are constructed. Why haven't they opened it yet? It looks ready for traffic.

State highway

I JUST read in the paper about raising the speed limit to 55 mph on Highway 74 and blaming the police officers for writing too many tickets. The cops and the city don't set the speed limits on Highway 74. That's a state highway.

Changing times

I'VE BEEN reading with interest all the commentaries on the dress codes for church. I want to relate an incident that happened to me. I was a deacon a few years back. One summer it was extremely hot, and I did not feel like wearing a suit. When I got to church I was informed that I would not be serving communion because I was not dressed appropriately. I resigned as a deacon, and I've not been back in that church since. I now go to another church, I'm quite happy there. They have a relaxed dress code. For a lot of you old-timers out there: that's the reason why a lot of your churches are falling apart and your membership is dropping. You won't go with the times.

Spared the Jesse visit

WHEN I heard the Chinese were going to let the airmen go, I realized they would do anything to keep Jesse Jackson out of China.

Control that dog

TO THE couple who live on Pawnee in Indian Hills in Jackson: The neighbors in Indian Hills do not appreciate you allowing your Beagle to water our shrubs, flowers and lawns when you are walking him. Please keep him on a tighter leash and off our lawns.

Support the republic

ADDRESSING THE person who says communism is a good thing: The aim of communism is to abolish capitalism and to establish a society in which all goods are to be socially planned and distributed. In other words, the abolition of private property and the concentration of economic and social activities in the hands of the state. Communists believe private property is the source of all social ills. Our pledge of allegiance is to the United States and to the republic for which its stands.

Poor partisanship

LET ME get this straight. Missouri Republicans generally supported the idea of letting the voters decide about carrying concealed weapons but seem reluctant to do so when it comes to the governor's proposal to build and improve highways and bridges. Methinks the reason is that state Republicans know it will pass and the Democrats will get the credit. Thus, Missouri Republican opposition to the idea of referring the governor's proposal to the voters is the most blatant act of irresponsible partisanship in Missouri political history.

Faint praise

OK, CALLER. We get the point. For the umpteenth time you have harangued about Bush being an honest man. I agree with you. He is an honest man. Just like Herbert Hoover.

Shifting the focus

I HAVE formulated a Law of Limbaugh. When David Limbaugh writes a column about the antics of Bill Clinton, it is a surefire indicator President Bush is up to something Limbaugh doesn't like. However, the Law of Limbaugh dictates than in such situations he must chastise Clinton rather than verbally whack W.

University living

AFTER READING the article about the problems with student housing at the university, I had to add my two cents' worth. Not only has Residence Life made quite a mess of things for on-campus students, but the off-campus apartments for married students are a joke. They are poorly maintained, and the tenants are not held to any standard of appropriate behavior for apartment living. Furthermore, no partnership has been formed between the university and the city to address and resolve the crime and safety issues in the area. The Residence Life office at SEMO needs a serious overhaul.

Don't forget us

A SPEAK Out caller referred to David Limbaugh and Rush Limbaugh as the prince and king of polarization. Perhaps, but we Speak Out callers should be honest enough to publicly proclaim that we are the peons of pettiness.

Don't butt in

WHY HAS the U.S. government been considering supplying more arms to Taiwan to defend itself against China? This began long before the present administration. What would we do if China supplied arms to Hawaii to try to become independent? I have good friends and business associates in Taipei, and I would love to see them attain their autonomy and independence, but history tells us our own United States declared war on the South for trying to secede. Everybody seems to be proud of that fact. Would you also be proud of China aggressing against Taiwan? Of course not, but how can you have it both ways?

Let's make a deal

STATE REP. Ron Jetton doesn't think condoms should be displayed in the Capitol. Neither do I. I'll see to it that they ban the display of condoms in the Capitol if Jetton makes sure they also eliminate all of the alcohol, hot air and political posturing. Deal?

Corporate compromise

THE LEVERAGE China uses on the United States to gain advantages like the huge trade imbalance is the threat of confiscation of the huge corporate investments in China. It is an outrage to democracy for corporate interests to place America in a compromising position.

Drug tests at home

SOMEONE ASKED about home drug tests. A pharmacist can direct you to those.
