Hillary's donation

I WONDER how many of the Missourian's readers know that Hillary Clinton donated the proceeds from her first book to the White House? This came to over $500,000. This is not common knowledge.

Wrong to kill

KILLING PEOPLE is wrong. Whether it is an individual doing the killing or all of us through the death penalty. Should murderers be punished? Of course they should. Lock them up. But do not use the state to murder them. I know some folks will use the eye-for-an-eye excuse to give the state the authority to murder. What if it were you who had been falsely accused of murder? All it takes is one or two dishonest eyewitnesses to lie and have you put to death by the state. Please think about it, friends.

Problem and solution

RAY ROWLAND recently wrote a letter to the editor denouncing government intervention in education. As a solution, he advocated government intervention in education.

Out of touch

KATHLEEN PARKER'S column critical of elevating the late Dale Earnhardt's status to that of hero is so out of touch with the readership of the Southeast Missourian.

Drill deep

MAYBE ALAN Journet can afford to pay $10 for a loaf of bread, but I can't. I say drill, drill, drill and keep prices down.

Not the answer

THE SOCIALISTS who feel like we need national health insurance are right. That would stop all those Canadians from hopping the border to get good medical attention. National health care is not the answer.

Same board members

IN RESPONSE to recent comments about Shawnee schools: McClure is a fine school, but it's not without need for improvement. We've had the same board members for years who do nothing. Now they are trying to railroad one board member out because she stands up to them.

A good person

OUR MAYOR here in Marble Hill is also our veterinarian. His name is Dr. Ben Ellis, and he's the most wonderful person I've ever met. My little Yorkie has to take Lasix. I ran out of Lasix Saturday, and Dr. Ben was not at his office. I called him at his home, and he brought Lasix down to his office for me. I so appreciate that man. He's not just a good mayor and a good veterinarian. He's a good person.

Better programs

I RECENTLY read where "Porgy and Bess" had attendance of about half what the Show Me Center anticipated. I keep wondering when SEMO is going to realize its service region does not have a high need for a visual and performing arts center. If we're going to spend $37.5 million, why don't we spend it for education in the areas of food, nurses, manufacturing, police and teachers? These are the needs of the service area of Southeast Missouri State University. Fine arts are wonderful, and they're part of all our lives. But they are not going to serve the region of Southeast Missouri like the knowledge of food production, nursing, manufacturing, law enforcement and teaching would serve the district.

Bombing the innocent

HOW IRONIC that George W. Bush was at the museum built to honor the victims of the Oklahoma City bombing, when he had just bombed Iraq. Bush needs to be careful when he speaks out against evil when he's bombing innocent people in a foreign country. What a way to start a presidency.

Trying to help

I'M A resident of Cape Girardeau County. I was reading an item in Speak Out that I literally could not believe. Someone was bragging about speeding through Jackson and how the Jackson police weren't doing their job. That person never thought maybe that police officer was in a hurry to get somewhere to help someone who was really in trouble.

Arts vs. trucks

I'M SO thankful the Show Me Center presented "Porgy and Bess." Not all of us enjoy the wrestling or the trucks. I feel we should be introduced to more culture. But what can one expect from a town like Cape Girardeau?
