Political comparison

IF YOU think politics isn't everything with some people, think again. A caller to Rush Limbaugh had the talk-radio host somewhat flustered. The caller compared the late race-car driver Dale Earnhardt Sr. to -- you guessed it -- Bill Clinton for engaging in risky behavior and always pushing the envelope.

Get those speeders

I THINK the Jackson aldermen need to investigate the Jackson Police Department. What are the police doing sitting in parking lots when they see speeding cars and trucks go by? They're getting paid to work, not sit around in parking lots and watch traffic.

It's up to Congress

COME ON, you Democrats and Republicans. Let's get it right. Clinton gets credit for the economy being good for eight years, and the Republicans say, "No, no, no. We controlled Congress and Senate for the last five or six years. We're the ones who got things right." Now the economy's bad, and the Republicans say, "Oh look what poor George Walker Bush inherited from Clinton." Hey, aren't Republicans the ones who controlled Congress and the Senate and the economy for the last five or six years? You dumped it on George. Now get him out of it.

We need health care

THE PERSON who had that big medical bill and lost everything is a good example why we should not vote for the Bushes and the Emersons. They would rather see people lose everything than have a national health-care program. I only hope we get wise and do something about them. Don't think about our own pocketbook. Let's think about what's good for the nation and the people who need health care.

Dr. Gott's answer

IN HIS column, Dr. Peter Gott raises an issue that deserves wider distribution. In answer to a woman who was worried about her daughter-in-law being bisexual, Gott's answered: "Reputable studies have, thus far, failed to show that homosexuality in men or women is inherited. Such sexual orientation appears to be learned, probably at an early age, rather then to be a product of the genes. Therefore, your perception of a contaminated bloodline' is probably unfounded. From the tone of your question, I assume that you disapprove of your former daughter-in-law's behavior. Certainly, this is your right."

It's their choice

THIS IS about the police officers who were shot and taking up money for them. They do that job by choice. Everyone has a choice of the job they want. Most people with a job that's risky have extra pay or take out insurance so if they get disabled it can help them make their payments. That's their job just like anybody. I think they're going a bit overboard with it. I hate to see anybody get injured, but that's all you see on TV anymore.

Great new leaders

OH, HOW we cherish our new, honorable president, George W. Bush, and his excellent vice president, Dick Cheney, and the special Cabinet officers the president has appointed. How very great quality of men and women we now have to guide our country back to America's traditional, honest values and family unity. God bless America and our new honorable leaders.

Thanks for the party

MANY THANKS for the annual Schnuck's Valentine's Day celebration. Thanks to Dennis Marchi, manager of Schnuck's, for his expertise as emcee, and Cindie Jeter from KZIM and K103. The breakfast was really good. And the entertainment by Mike Dumey and Robyn Hosp was fantastic. Thanks again. This is a party of six from Illinois.

Keep up your guard

SANITY HAS returned to the presidency and to the White House. Thank God. America's law-abiding citizens will still have to be on the alert, though, to counteract the attack dogs who are still out there trying to destroy our traditional American values and our constitutional form of government. We must not let down our guard to these radical rabble-rousers.

Excellent job

I'M CALLING to comment on the Jackson Police Department. I think the Jackson Police Department is doing an excellent job. The next time people want to complain about the police, just remember who they call when their house gets robbed or burglarized. So next time somebody's complaining about something, complain about something that really matters.

Walking in streets

HERE IN Cape, there is a city ordinance that states that if there is a sidewalk, people are to use it and not walk in the street. If they walk in the street, they can be issued a summons. Why isn't this law enforced, especially on Good Hope and South Lorimier streets? I almost run over people at night walking in the middle of these streets. Let's see if something can't be done.

Need turn arrows

I CANNOT believe the city placed traffic signals at Broadway and Clark with no left-turn lanes. How do they expect people to get on Clark Street with no turn arrow? I would think that somebody in this city would be smart enough to put left-turn arrows on those traffic lights.

Matter of shredding

THIS HAS to do with Bill Clinton's pardons and the money trail. I'm curious: Did Clinton say you wouldn't find a shred of evidence, or did he say all the evidence has been shredded?

They're prohibitionists

MOTHERS AGAINST Drunk Driving is the main force behind the push to lower the legal blood-alcohol level to 0.08 percent nationwide. Once they accomplish this, you can bet they'll start a campaign to lower it to 0.06 percent. The founder of MADD, Cindy Lightner, resigned in protest because the organization has gone from being dedicated to getting drunks off the road to an organization of prohibitionists. Drunk drivers who kill and maim don't have blood-alcohol content of 0.08 to 0.1 percent. If you check court records, I'm sure you'll find practically all of these offenders had blood-alcohol content of 0.15 percent and above. All this law will accomplish is to make criminals of innocent people and put more money into the pockets of lawyers.

Time for reflection

I WAS reading a letter to the editor about leaving felons to reflect on their crimes. Most of these people don't care about that. They have plenty of time before they get executed to reflect on their crime. People who are soft-hearted about criminals should think how they would like it if they had to live close to those people the rest of their lives. These people knew what they were doing. They should pay the price. The law has plenty authority to say who does and who doesn't live through judges and juries.

God expects justice

IT ALWAYS worries me when someone starts a letter with: "I was in my social studies class and ... ." What concerns me is the liberal teachings of social-studies teachers. I certainly agree with the pastor who wrote in about the death penalty. I think if you do something bad enough, you deserve the death penalty. It's not playing God. I think God expects us to hand out justice, and if you take someone's life and show no remorse, you deserve the death penalty.

Art vs. wrestling

TO THE person who spoke out against wrestling at the Show Me Center, often what passes for art is just sleaze. I saw "Porgy and Bess" on TV, and I wasn't about to fork out any money to go see it. The review said it all. It's about a whore and a guy on his knees rolling around on something. People who like to think that they're better than those who go see wrestling are merely fooling themselves, because art can be pretty trashy.

PD needs some scrutiny

I THINK it's about time the Cape Girardeau Police Department got placed under a little scrutiny. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out. I hope it's done fairly.

Treat all the same

FIRST, I'D like to say that I feel sorry for the officers who were shot in Cape Girardeau. My complaint is with KFVS and everything it has done for these officers. When was the last time KFVS went to all this effort for someone who was accidentally shot on accident or hurt on a job where injury is less of a possibility? Citizens are citizens, and everyone should be treated equally. I'm disappointed with KFVS and the way it is using this to its advantage.

It's incompetence

I WAS reading in the paper about the dog breeders inspection system being flawed. In the article, officials said efforts are being made to improve the state inspection system. Why would efforts be made to improve it? Why don't they just follow the rules and regulations and laws like they're set out and be done with it? This is a problem with government. A lot of people are incompetent. They should get rid of those people. That's the solution.

Selling our secrets

I WANT to comment about the air strikes against Iraq. We don't have inspectors over there. We transfer technology to China, and then China sells it to Iran and Iraq and gives them our military secrets. I wish all those people who support Bill Clinton could see how they helped make it possible for Iranians to turn radar on and try to shoot our American bombers down. They would find out what it means to vote for someone who helps betray their country.

Riding coattails

BILL CLINTON had nothing in common with Marc Rich other than the money Rich gave him for his campaign and his library. So you can bet Rich bought his pardon. Even the big Clinton supporters have begun to jump his ship and say how terrible this was. But where were these people on adultery, lies and other disgraceful events? Riding his coattails, of course.

Nice, but gullible

THERE ARE real nice people in the Heartland. I think a lot of them. The only trouble is they let the Southeast Missourian, David Limbaugh and Peter Kinder do their thinking and choosing for them on Election Day.

God is in control

THIS IS in regard to the Feb. 16 letter to the editor about respecting the officers. I agree that the officers should be shown respect, but I disagree that they are the ones who allow us to sleep peacefully at night. I think that belongs to God, not to the police officers. He has sanctioned them to do a good job, but he is in control of our peaceful rest and our rising every morning.

Sports everywhere

HAS ANYBODY besides me ever noticed how much sports consume every channel on TV, even The Weather Channel! Can't they realize that there are other things important besides sports? I hope so. It's time to do something about it.

Degrees at birth

ACCORDING TO the president of the University of California, I would guess that we should start issuing bachelor's degrees at birth rather than having students go through any schooling. They've downgraded degrees to where they don't mean much with all the social ideas and such, so why even bother with degrees and schooling? Math isn't important? Why is reading important? Why is writing important? Why is schooling important? Just give them degrees and let them go at it.

Keeping our money

IN THE early 1960s, John F. Kennedy proposed a cut in taxes by 2 percent of the gross domestic product. Ronald Reagan slashed them by 3.3 percent. By contrast, Bush would lower the federal tax burden by only 1.2 percent of gross domestic product. Reagan's bill reduced federal revenue 18.7 percent annually in a time of deficits. Bush would diminish total federal revenue by only 6.2 percent a year in a season of mega-surpluses. Clinton's two terms were boom years for government. Between 1990 and 2000, federal taxes grew from 21.6 percent to 24.4 percent of personal income. Bush is proposing to restore part of this to its rightful owners. His plan would reduce tax rates across the board. He's not giving anything to the people. He is letting them keep what they earn.

Boat rammed the sub

I WOULD like for the news media -- and probably the military -- to explain what caused the Japanese fishing boat to run into our submarine. Everybody's acting like our submarine ran into the fishing boat, but it seems to me like the fishing boat ran into the submarine.
