THE Washington Post is babbling again about President Obama inheriting a huge deficit from President Bush. A lot of people swallow this nonsense. Let's review a short civics lesson. Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress. And which political party has controlled Congress since January 2007? The Democrats. They controlled the budget process for fiscal years 2008 and 2009, as well as fiscal years 2010 and 2011. In that first year, they had to contend with Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending after Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases. For FY 2009, though, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid bypassed Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the FY 2009 budget. And where was Obama? Right there he was in the middle of it all, a Democratic member of the Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills. And he signed the omnibus bill as president to complete FY 2009.
OUR country has spent too much money and is in debt to China. The uncertainty of this debt has caused this country to go into recession. Now our president wants to fix the debt by spending more money. The only prudent thing to do is to reduce spending. We need to spend a little less than we take in and slowly pay off our debt. Sen. Jim DeMint has proposed and filed a balanced-budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution for the last several years, but it has gone nowhere in Congress. It is time for regular citizens to support DeMint for a balanced budget.
WHY blame President Bush? For openers, he took a budget surplus of $200 billion and -- with tax cuts for the rich, an unpopular and unnecessary war and the largest entitlement program (and handout to the pharmaceutical companies) in decades -- took us back to deficit spending and an enormous national debt.
THE Iraq Liberation Act in 1998 passed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 360 to 38. Bill Clinton was president. George Bush was just following through on what was U.S. foreign policy that was started during the Clinton administration.
