Cable concerns

Does anyone know what MoDOT has spent erecting and repairing the cables on I-55? I honestly would like to know where I could find this information. Personally, I believe they are a hazard and defeat the purpose of an open, straight and obstruction-free highway system. The cables create a no-escape zone.

Wisdom, knowledge

Seek wisdom, not knowledge. Knowledge is of the past. Wisdom is of the future.

Redundancy

I looked up the word redundancy and the dictionary gave as an example, "Opinions expressed in the Southeast Missourian's Speak Out section on the subject of Obamacare."

ACA in the future

Like Ronald Reagan, I am an optimist and a realist. So, all of the hyped-up criticism aside, in a decade or so, tens of millions of Americans will be signed up for the Affordable Care Act at the federal or state level and the cost of health-care insurance will have, in large part due to subsidies, dropped dramatically. We'd be better off with a single-payer system like having Medicare for all, but Obamacare will work.

Culture issue

I was very sad to see "Night of the Living Dead," a stage play being offered at Jackson City Park last weekend. The article in Thursday's paper promoting the play exemplifies the sad condition that exists in American society today, an obsession with killing and death. According to the article, the goal is to "scare the heck of out people and to be startling." The producers are wanting people to "enjoy that." The play promises to mirror the original film from 1968 in which zombies must be shot in the head before they do unspeakable things to their victims. It promises to have an unhappy ending. Wake up, America! Let's turn our focus to that which promotes life and the well being of others. Find joy, fun and laughter over what is actually funny and good.

Parade issues

I've been going to the Homecoming parades for 40 years, and this last one had to be the worst. The organization was terrible. If they can't do any better than this, I won't be going anymore. I hate to say that, but it had to be the worst.

Nonnegotiable

Why does the GOP think the Affordable Care Act is still negotiable? It was passed into law then tested in our Supreme Court and found to be constitutional. It's a law, not a pending bill to be negotiated. Kudos to Obama and the Senate for not caving to the attempted extortion. You don't negotiate the price of a house after you buy it.

Calm down

Calm down. Everything's cool. If you want or need Obamacare, you have until March 31 to do so. If you don't want it, that's cool, too. That's what freedom of choice is all about.

Blaming capitalism

They should have allowed government bureaucrats do the job. All of the problems with healthcare.gov illustrate the failure of capitalism since the work was contracted out to the private sector.

Shutdown comments

Be prepared. When Congress cries out (almost in unison) that we will never, never, never again shut down the federal government and take us to the brink of financial collapse, in political speak it means the opposite.
