Raising children

TO the bus driver who said it's the parent's fault for undisciplined children. Kudos. I'm glad someone finally spoke up about this. There are so many children today who are brats and have no respect. When I see a child acting out and not listening, I blame the parents. When he's jumping around and talking back, I blame the parents. I have a 6-year-old who is more mature than most teenagers. I choose to be his mother, not just his friend who tries to spare his feelings. Parents, you're raising our future. Try to do better.

Too loud

REGARDING the River Campus: We went to see "Little Shop of Horrors." It was excellent and professional, but we were disappointed in the acoustics. They were too loud. You couldn't understand some of the speakers because the sound was up too high. I hope it can be adjusted.

Smoking trucks

CAN'T there be something done about the heavy, black smoke emissions from dump trucks? When you're following them, your visibility is not clear and you can smell the smoke in your car.

Men versus robots

WE like our helpful garbage men. The city should give raises instead of spending millions for robots.

Dining out

I would like to know why there is no good place to eat in Southeast Missouri that has both good food and good service. I moved here from St. Louis last year. I have grown to love this area but hate the lack of good places to eat at. I have asked co-workers, family, friends and even strangers for their suggestions. Southeast Missouri has a lot to offer with that one exception. When I find a place with good food, the service is horrible or tolerable at best. When the service is good, the food is disgusting. I would like to issue a challenge to your newspaper and your readers: Help Southeast Missouri residents find great and enjoyable places to dine.

The real enemy

THE Taliban and al-Qaida are not the same thing. Though both are terrorist groups, the Taliban had nothing to do with 9/11 and is not an international movement, as is al-Qaida. The Taliban is a ruthless group that, among other things, treats women terribly. However, it is not in our national interest to police the world against governing groups with which we disagree as long as they pose no direct threat to the national security of the United States. That said, there are an estimated 100 al-Qaida in Afghanistan. That is one of many reasons why we don't need to be sending 40,000 additional troops there. The real threat is in Pakistan. If we try to nation-build in Afghanistan, we'll be there 400 years.

The new Moses

MANY derisively refer to President Obama as a messiah. According to Time magazine, there is a good case to be made that he is another Moses pointing us in the direction of the promised land. Like Moses, he may not get there with us while he is president. For that we should be eternally grateful.

World image

WHEN George Bush shamed this country around the world, conservative columnists made excuses and repeated ridiculous bumper-sticker slogans like "We've got to fight them over there or we'll have to fight them over here." Now that we've gotten rid of Bush, we are to believe that, miraculously, all the perceived negatives about the U.S. are instantly obliterated and every problem is Obama's fault. How refreshing to have a president who is intelligent, articulate and respected around the world. We now enjoy the cooperation of other countries instead of scorn.

Presidential support

DAVID Limbaugh wrote that he was "amazed at the naivete of the people" who continue to support President Obama. I know how you feel, Mr. Limbaugh. For a long time, until the bottom fell out of his approval rating, I felt the same way about George W. Bush.

Ill and working

I work for a major telephone company. Today I have the flu. The company offers no sick days, and I don't have any available vacation days. When I called I was told my choices were to take an unexcused absence and risk losing my job or come to work. Now I know how epidemics get started.
