I AM concerned about environmental issues. Greedy people need a good dose of smarts. They foul the nest their children are living in. We must all make every effort to be efficient in our living. We must respect the environment and protect it.
HAVING BOTH Main Street and Water Street running the same direction is about the stupidest thing I've heard. Traffic will have to go up Spanish Street back to Broadway or down to William Street. That's not going to do the downtown district any good. Now we're going to have public transportation for visitors, but we can't have public transportation for the taxpayers who are going to pay for this. What's wrong with our mayor and city officials?
ANOTHER EXAMPLE of government tax and spending: The restaurant and motel tax has a surplus of $1 million, so we spend it on a trolley bus and signs. I only wish John Mehner, chamber of commerce president, could sell new business and manufacturing like he can sell our mayor and city council. Here's a unique idea: Lower the tax.
THANK YOU, Southeast Missourian, for your excellent coverage of Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities in Cape Girardeau. It is much appreciated.
WHILE WE'RE adding Christian creation science to school textbooks, let's be sure to include some other creation theories. I like Hindu creation science in which the world was created by Brahma after hatching from an egg and then dividing into halves. Or how about an African creation story which states people once lived beneath Earth's surface? Many creation stories have been passed down through many generations and believed by many people. It doesn't make them true.
IN YOUR "Fact or fiction" blurb on Terry Teachout, you failed to mention that he is a pioneer blogger and one of the most successful on the Internet. His arts blog covers a variety of topics and is not just for the Manhattanite. You can immerse yourself in a cultural pool by going to www.terryteachout.com.
I WOULD like to share my recent experience with Amtrak. I rode a train from Chicago to New York without any heat. It was very cold. I couldn't feel my toes. There were no apologies from the attendants. I called Amtrak to complain. All Amtrak could give me was another train ticket -- as if I'm going to be on another train. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told they don't talk to customers.
QUESTION: "WHY does Water Street have to be one way south? It could just as easily be one way north. Visitors aren't going to view the murals from their car. They will park and walk so they can read the interpretive signs." Answer: Most of the mural viewers will be onboard the trolley coming from their westside motel.
