Faith is what counts

THE BIBLE can be proven and has been by our Lord and Savior. Nothing else matters. Tidal waves, flooding and war don't matter as long as your faith in the Lord is strong. God blessed our country because of our deep faith in him.

Delivering the mail

MY MOTHERS works at the post office. She has been required to work 10- and 12-hour shifts for weeks in order to get everyone's holiday mail delivered. Thankfully, she has a family who knows how hard she works and what she puts up with, so we help out as much as we can around the house. Be thankful for postal workers.

Great extravaganza

I'D LIKE to comment on all the musical performances we enjoyed Thursday night at the Martin Luther King extravaganza. Wow! My family went for the first time because my daughter was performing. We'll never miss it again. Those who did miss it really missed out. Thank you to the organizers of this event, and keep up the great work.

Lights are helpful

I THINK the new lights along Kingshighway by the county park is just what that area needed. It is so nice to see your way out to Interstate 55. I didn't realize how dark that road was at night.

Angel in disguise

ON JAN. 4 I was cutting through Arena Park on my way to a drugstore. My car stopped, and I could not get it to start. It was raining hard. I have a breathing problem and had my small oxygen appliance in use. A red van came up East Rodney Street. I stepped out of my car and motioned at the young woman driving the van. She came to my car and tried to call a garage for me. She couldn't get the garage on her cell phone, so she had me get in her van. She wasn't sure of the streets because she was new to the area. She drove me to the garage, and a wrecker soon towed my car. I needed a battery. I wanted to pay the young woman, but she refused. I failed to get her name. She was an angel in disguise. I pray for her every day. I realize Cape Girardeau is a wonderful city. Thank you.

School chauffeur

IT IS Jan. 11. I am dropping my child off at Central Middle School. The car in front of me is dropping off a student. The driver has pulled up in the middle of the crossing lane, but cars are supposed to be in front of it. It is a police car, No. 13. Is this where our tax increase went -- so the police can chauffeur their kids around?

Grain trucks should stop

I WISH the farmers around Oran, Mo., would realize that those octagon-shaped red things that have S-T-O-P on them apply to them when they pull their grain trucks right out in front of oncoming traffic on Highway 77. I will report them to the state highway patrol if they don't stop doing this. They almost caused another wreck.

Diversity on board

I DON'T see a problem with having older people on the school board. If I didn't want someone on the school board, I wouldn't vote for him. It would be up to me to encourage others not to vote for a person. Sometimes hardly anyone runs for school board. Sometimes it's younger people who don't have any sense at all. It's good to have different people on the school board.

Backed-up traffic

TRAFFIC IS backed up on Perryville Road and Cape Rock Road all the time. No one does anything about that.

Alienating believers

A RECENT column by Gene Lyons mocked God and belittled those who believe in him. The Democratic Party has embraced these types of liberals and has alienated much of mainstream America. Most Americans love their country and believe in God. I can't imagine the Democrats winning another national election if they continue down this road.

Check it out

THE APARTMENT complex near the university has been there since the 1970s. John Voss has owned his nearby home for five years. Didn't he check this out? Didn't he look in the backyard and see what was going on? That's part of a buyer's responsibility. Now Voss wants other people to the problem. Suck it up. Sell your house, or put up with it. These apartments were there first.

Require landscaping

IF JACKSON is going to have rules for landlords, it should be that they keep their properties landscaped, especially along Main Street at Farmington Road. These are main thoroughfares.

American medicine

PHARMACEUTICAL companies continue to warn everyone about purchasing prescriptions from other countries. The last order of my medicines from Mexico were much cheaper, of course, but the funny this is they came from Pfizer and Glaxco, Smith, Kline. Those are American companies. So why are we not buying from other countries? Beats me.

Civilized arguing

REGARDLESS OF the origins of man, you and I are here now. We should behave in a civilized manner. Scholars argue.

It's an oxymoron

WHEN USED for faith or religious purposes, the phrase "creation science" is an oxymoron.

One way north

Why does Water Street have to be one way south? It could just as easily be one way north. Visitors aren't going to view the murals from their car. They will park and walk so they can read the interpretive signs.
