In a column published June 11, Southeast Missourian publisher Jon Rust mentions that Tommy Sowers, congressional candidate for the 8th District, is a "highly aggressive" candidate. I agree that Tommy is running an "aggressive" campaign and is continually on the offense. I would expect nothing less from a Green Beret who spent 11 years in the U.S. Army.
Tommy's "aggressive" approach to running for office has him spending time in the district listening to voters' concerns. He spent February traveling the 28 counties of the district, living and working with residents. Over Memorial Day weekend he walked the entire 100-Mile Yard Sale, talking to voters alongside Highway 25.
Along the way, he has been "aggressive" in presenting many uncomfortable facts about his opponent's record and the economic state of our district. This is not mudslinging. This is fact. Those we entrust to represent us must be accountable for their leadership. In a political climate wrought with partisanship and anti-incumbent sentiment, Tommy's "aggressive" pursuit to fight for his home is exactly what we need from leaders.
I can't help but be reminded of the words of a great Missouri leader of my parents' generation, Harry Truman, who said, "I never did give them hell. I just told the truth, and they thought it was hell." Perhaps when Sowers raises an issue like Jo Ann Emerson's support of the bank bailout, or Fox News reports about her support of a taxpayer-funded pension bailout, the temperature is rising a bit much for this so-called fiscal conservative.
Tommy Sowers is a soldier with an impeccable military record of leadership, including the command of troops and the award of two bronze stars. He has developed a keen understanding of the needs of the 8th Congressional District. I am proud to call him my friend and to serve as his treasurer.
JOHN P. HEISSERER, Treasurer, Sowers for Congress, 1198 Wolf Lane, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701
