In just four weeks, Random Acts of Kindness Week will begin -- on Mother's Day, just like the previous two weeklong celebrations.
Showing kindness in one way or another isn't confined to one week a year. The Southeast Missourian hears about the generosity of the people of our area throughout the year through letters to the editor, Speak Out and telephone calls that frequently turn into news stories.
But the overwhelming response to setting aside one week to focus on random acts of kindness indicates that such an event serves a good purpose.
Thousands of special Random Acts of Kindness Week stickers will be handed out. Still more thousands of specially designed bookmarks will be given away as a reminder of those special activities that leave such a positive impression on others.
It is no accident that our celebration of kindness begins on Mother's Day. It is from our mothers that most of us learn the fundamentals of generosity and giving. It is in honor of mothers everywhere that we start Random Acts of Kindness week on their special day.
Now is the time to sign up as an official Random Acts of Kindness Week participant. Individuals, schools, clubs, churches and other organizations are encouraged to get involved by planning special activities during the week of May 10-16. And let us know about those acts of kindness that have affected your life in one way or another. We will be happy to share them with our readers.
