The Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce is basking in both state and national recognition as a major force promoting the best interests of the community it serves.

During the chamber's annual appreciation dinner last month, the organization was informed that it would be recognized as the 2005 Chamber of Commerce of the Year by the Missouri Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Last week, the chamber was notified that it has received four-star (out of a possible five) accreditation by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The state honor recognized the vitality of the Cape chamber, its programs and the participation by such a large segment of the business and industrial community. The Cape chamber has for years been one of the largest -- more than 1,000 members -- in Missouri, even when compared to chambers in metropolitan areas.

The national accreditation is a process that demonstrates the chamber has met minimum operating and program standards in such areas as accountability, financial transparency, employee involvement, political advocacy and community involvement. Approval for accreditation rests with a panel of U.S chamber board members.

Effective chambers of commerce are a partnership of professional and volunteer leadership combined with the involvement of members who accept responsibility for developing information in key interest areas and sharing that knowledge with all the chamber's members. Effective chambers of commerce get facts about issues and promote discussions that lead to a better understanding and decisions that will result in a more dynamic community.

Congratulations to chamber employees, volunteer leaders and members for their efforts on behalf of Cape Girardeau. Particular congratulations go to John Mehner, chamber president. These recognitions are well-deserved.
