It is a trying time for all Americans, but particularly for the men and women who are called on the spur of the moment to defend the country wherever they are needed. Some have been dispatched to the Middle East, and some have been assigned to guard the nation's airports and other facilities against further tragedies.

None of us knows what the future may hold in this new war against terrorism, but Americans can find solace in the fact that a strong military is waiting and ready to respond when summoned. The men and women who have been and will be called to duty as the United States goes after terrorists around the world deserve our thanks and prayers.
