It was disheartening to read the Oct. 5 Speak Out comment that characterized David Limbaugh as "mean and obnoxious" and further promised to "not contribute another dollar to help raise funds for the library" after reading Andrea L. Buchanan's article concerning a recent library fund-raising event.

As attendees of the event, we can assure the caller that Limbaugh was neither mean nor obnoxious. He stressed the need for unity in our country and declined to discuss the Clinton administration in unflattering terms. When he spoke of having plenty of time to "slam Clinton in the future," his words were delivered in a joking manner. To our ears, they simply underscored his commitment to political unity.

By including these remarks in the article, Buchanan downplayed the subject of the 30-minute speech -- the ins and outs of writing a New York Times bestseller -- and instead focused on words that could be misinterpreted as inflammatory and mean-spirited.

Limbaugh should be applauded for writing a book that has achieved the status it has. It was this success, not the political perspective, that was celebrated at the library-sponsored event.
