To the editor:
My children and I would like to thank the East County Fire Department for its efforts to save as much as possible of our home, the former Coker School, which burned June 7.
Although the home was lost before the flames were seen and reported, the fire department's quick response and immediate action enabled firefighters to save the well house and tool shed. We are thankful to everyone who rushed to our aid and comfort.
As members of this excellent department ourselves, we know the feelings of sorrow and compassion when you see a family lose so much, but this building was more than just our family home. It was a landmark in the community, and several of the firefighters are descendants of students at the school. So our loss is also their loss.
We wish to say thank you. We know you did your very best as you are trained to do, and you went beyond as you always do. We are very proud of you and satisfied with your efforts. Your care and concern, your hard work and your dedication are recognized and appreciated by this family, this community and the district you serve so well.
May God bless and keep you all.
