To the editor:
I am writing in response to state Rep. Gene Copeland's July 16 letter to the editor.
Charged were made, and a conviction was handed down.
Instead of apologizing to his constituents and his political party for having an overzealous, paid campaign worker, he is once again accusing everyone else, especially the Republican Party.
I am most upset because our congresswoman, Jo Ann Emerson, has been one of Copeland's main targets. Congresswoman Emerson only intervened to bring in the U.S. attorney general to get an investigation started. This was the correct line of action.
Copeland needs to apologize to Emerson for blaming her for his unfortunate problems.
The people of Copeland's district should be leading the cry for fair elections. This cry should come from all political parties and from those who are not politically active.
I hear every day from people who tell me they dont want to be involved in politics because they don't make a difference. This is not true. Here is an area you can control. If you don't want the feds or local authorities watching your elections, then you have to take actions for yourselves.
You should demand an apology from Copeland for not understanding that this should not be treated as a political problem or as a personal problem against him. This is a matter of the people. All people in his district and in all districts are being cheated of the right to a fair election.
DONNA LICHTENEGGER, Republican Chairwoman8th District
