Board members of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce were all smiles Tuesday as they announced the selection of hometown boy John Mehner as their new chief executive. The choice, we feel, is a sound one. There's no reason first-rate leadership can't begin at home.
The board's decision came at the end of a national search. Although other finalists were experienced chamber executives, Mehner brings his own set of unique abilities and experiences.
First off, he knows Cape Girardeau and the region. A graduate of Cape Central High School, he earned a degree in criminal justice and computer science at Southeast Missouri State University. This homegrown insight should allow Mehner to dig right in - focusing on operations instead of geography.
He also understands the problems of small business. Mehner has been associated with his family business, Advanced Business Systems, since 1985. He also realizes the need for new business and industry. Instrumental in the formation of the new area recruitment association, Mehner should be an able player in this regard.
He also understands the chamber. He has been an active member of the board since 1990, and served as its chairman in 1992. As a past president, he is familiar with the local business scene. His hardworking service has provided him with invaluable knowledge of the financial and organizational makeup of the chamber. With training from various national institutes, Mehner should soon become an able leader. Other civic involvements include Easter Seals, Vision 2000, Civic Center, and the Area Wide United Way.
His selection marks a real turning point for the Cape Girardeau chamber. The group has grown and prospered under the skillful direction of Bob Hendrix for an unprecedented 21 years. But now it's time for someone else to lead the organization into new waters.
Mehner is well aware of past divisions in the community. He contends this knowledge won't lead to preconceived notions as he works to heal old wounds. Other goals include accessibility, a more active legislative committee and improved minority relations. All are admirable objectives.
As the only local candidate, Mehner may feel pressure to prove himself to some chamber members. But we feel confident he will win over any doubters. John Mehner's background, combined with a long-term devotion to the city and chamber, clearly put him head and shoulders above the rest.
