Generous community

The generosity of our area is being demonstrated in so many ways this year. Donations to charitable organizations, especially the Area Wide United Way, are up. Many individuals and organizations are finding ways to show their holiday support for U.S. troops around the globe. Virtually every special fund raiser for those in need has been generously supported in recent months. And the shelves of food pantries are filling up, thanks to seasonal food drives.

The annual Scouting for Food project saw a major increase in the number of canned food items left on residential doorknobs last Saturday. Other organizations are collecting donated food as well. As a result, food pantries are able to help needy families with items that will keep them well-fed.

There may be a simple explanation for the outpouring of generosity this year. The nation has just endured a major economic setback that affected millions of Americans financially. This experience, some experts say, has increased the awareness of well-off Americans about the plight of others who have to struggle financially even when times are good. As a result, those of us who are able to contribute generously have found ways to do so.

The upshot of this generosity is more resources to meet the needs of those in our community who seek help. That's the way it should be: Neighbors helping neighbors.
