Last week, the Alternative School celebrated the graduation of two students. Lakita Johnson and Chris Welter both earned diplomas from Central High School through the Alternative Education Center.

Alternative school students face many hurdles. Some are parents. Others have been expelled or suspended or may have dropped out of school. These students must move beyond outside and personal challenges to succeed.

The program enrolls students from Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Nell Holcomb, Zalma and Meadow Heights. Its enrollment and graduation rates have steadily improved. This year eight of the 38 students enrolled were graduated from the program.

The hard work of these graduates demonstrates that a diploma is within reach for all students, regardless of their circumstances.
