The summer festival season's upon us, and the big question is: which field trip are you going to take this summer? You can't go to all of them (unless you can spare $250 a person,) so what's the right getaway for YOU? Consider:

VANS WARPED TOUR (June 25):

Hachi Machi, this is huge! This sucker's got 6 stages!! And that's if you ignore the skateboarding, the rock climbing, the Balls of Steel, the Girlz Garage, the slip n' slide... this thing's the circus come to town!

There's even a "Reverse Daycare" center, where parents can wait in an air-conditioned tent for their kids to finish with their shenanigans. Of course, if you spend most of your day there, you're gonna feel really old...

ARP (Average Retail Price) : $25.75 a ticket

Number of bands: 40-plus.

What kind of music: The soundtrack to any Tony Hawk videogame

What kind of guys/girls: Skaters, high school band geeks, Hot Topic customers

What should I wear? Loose pants and a Weezer shirt.

LOLLAPALOOZA (July 7):

What, is Jane's Addiction breaking up again? Lollapalooza's been relaunched, and they're keeping it old-school. Just like before, Perry's tried to put together a couple of favorites, along with a bunch of bands that you've never heard of, but should have. In case music isn't enough, there'll be video games, social awareness, belly dancing, and Steve-O from Jackass.

ARP: $64.00

Number of Bands/Acts: 12

What kind of music: "Oh, you know, a little bit of everything, I'm not particular..." (you see how annoying that answer is?)

What kind of guys/girls: Treehuggers, weekend ravers, people who talk about the first Lollapalooza even if they didn't go...

What should I wear: Sandals and glowsticks, for later...

OZZFEST (July 17):

No contest, this is the scariest tour of the year. When Disturbed is an afternoon act, you know you're in for a bleepin' rough show. This tour is also semi-historical: besides the first stateside festival appearance of Cradle of Filth, this will be ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newstead's tour of duty with both Ozzy Osbourne's band and art-metal pioneers Voivod.

ARP: $43.00

Number of Bands: 21

What kind of music: Sign of the goat! Sign of the goat!

What kind of guys/ girls: Goths, mooks, and the girls all the bad guys want...

What should I wear: a fresh tattoo of the demon from Fantasia's "Night on Bald Mountain"

SUMMER SANITARIUM (July 25):

On the plus side, this will be indoors, in the same dome that the St Louis Rams play. And it starts later than the other festivals, so you can sleep in a bit...

Honestly, though, these are opera ticket prices for what is basically the 21st century "Monsters of Rock" tour. If you're a major fan of any of these bands, you already know about this tour, and you've made up your mind. I wouldn't get these kind of tickets for a blind date, though ...

ARP: $75.00

Number of Bands: 5 (Metallica, limpbizkit, Linkin Park, Deftones, Mudvayne)

What kind of music: "Reeeal Rock"

What kind of guys/ girls: people who plan to name their kids Lars, Chino, or Chester

What should I wear: A "Ride the Lightning" t-shirt and no-stain khaki's

Does anybody notice that the fewer bands on the bill, the more the tickets cost? Whuzzupidat?

The Ataris call Long Beach, California home; in fact, they run a record store there (so they always have a practice space.) So why is their latest album titled So Long, Astoria? If you're up on your 80's movie trivia, you know that Astoria, Oregon was the hometown of the Goonies, from the Steven Spielberg film. And if you've heard the latest album (or paid attention to the lyrics of "In This Diary"), you know that the Ataris can get nostalgic, even if they're one of today's hot bands.

Another bunch of rockin' movie buffs are Taking Back Sunday, who used the video for their latest single "Cute without the E" as a tribute to the coolest Brad Pitt movie ever, Fight Club. That may be the only look you get of the band this summer; after returning from their European tour, the band announced on their website that they "need to take a step back at this time." Obviously, this means no Warped Tour dates. But does this mean the end of the band? Stay tuned...

Do you like AFI? I mean, really like AFI? Do you know all the words to "The Leaving Song, Part II" yet? Do you have your hardcover copy of the "Sing the Sorrow" CD, complete with the DVD short film? Do you have your signature edition AFI shoes from Vans sneakers?

Cold's on the radio again, with the track "Stupid Girl." It's not a Garbage cover, or a Rolling Stones cover, or a Neil Young cover... it's an original, co-written by Cold frontman Scooter Ward and Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo. A few years back, Cold was the scheduled opening act for Weezer's 'green album' tour. However, Cold left the tour early after being constantly assaulted onstage by Weezer fans(!) Rivers, however, is a fan; he even sang back-up vocals on "Stupid Girl".
