Just can't wait for First Friday?
Cadmium River Studio will be showing pieces from 30 artists Saturday, including featured artists Matthew L. Shriver and Celia Galarreta. Studio operator Randy Hays said this night should be circled on any art lover's calender.
"Sometimes you get a great opportunity to see a great examination of different types of art, and we think this showing has that," Hays said. "Every one of these artists can make you stand back and take notice. Matt and Celia, I think, will impress as much as anyone in town."
Shriver, a full-time French teacher at Jackson High School, said that although he has been creating his digital artwork for many years, this will be his first showing. Shriver said viewers will notice his use of color in his pieces.
"I think abstract is the best way to describe my work," he said. "I try to create something interesting from nothing. A lot of times, I don't have a plan as to what I am creating. I just know when it looks right, and then it is done. The best part for me is that everyone sees something different when they look at my art. In one piece someone saw the Virgin Mary while someone else saw a penguin."
Galarreta, who specializes in ancient and modern Peruvian aluminum embossed artwork, should also catch the attention of many.
"Celia is the kind of artist that you wish you could see everyday but that just doesn't happen," Hays said. "Her stuff is so perfectly crafted, it's great to see."
And although the low-key Cadmium River Studio may often be missed by some, Shriver said the art is always great there.
"I became aware of the art gallery inside the Global Cafe when someone recommended me there," he said. "I was asking some people where I could get some of my work in the public eye and that's one place I was told about. I never knew about the gallery there before, but there are a lot of great pieces. When I first visited I was nervous because everything looked very good and I wasn't sure I could measure up."
The Cadmium River Studio is inside The Global Cafe at 1315 Broadway, Cape Girardeau. A buffet dinner with the artists will be served at 6:30 p.m. for a $10 charge. RSVP by calling The Global Cafe at 334-7955.
