Crunch time

Cape First Church in Cape Girardeau is hosting its annual Family Day at Arena Park at 5:30 p.m. today as a free, community outreach event providing nearly 3,000 hot dogs, followed by an expected 12-car demolition derby in the Arena Park grandstands.

Seven thousand attendees are expected along with the more than 200 church staff and volunteers, Cape First Church staff pastor Jeff Wilson said. In addition to the few thousand hot dogs the church prepares for the event, Wilson said there also would be "cases upon cases" of sodas available to attendees Friday.

He said the event began with a desire to connect with the community, to give the community a family-friendly event and "something else to connect with Cape First about."

More details can be found on the event's Facebook page.

The Howard Aslinger Memorial Scholarship Foundation -- which began in 2009 -- is hosting Summer Music Fest at 4 p.m. Saturday at Arena Park's Red Show Barn in Cape Girardeau to benefit local individuals with disabilities.

President of the Howard Aslinger Memorial Scholarship Foundation Jean Aslinger said the foundation also hosts the annual 24-hour endurance run in March, and the idea for the event this weekend came about shortly after the competition's inception.

"The 24-hour was the first year, and I think that next year we started with a karaoke night," Aslinger said. "It went well, but it really wasn't what we were wanting. So then we thought, 'Let's just have bands play.'"
