Hongji Yue, a Chinese visiting scholar in the Department of History at Southeast Missouri State University, will have an exhibition of his calligraphy artwork on display.
The exhibit will be Saturday through May 15 in the first-floor hallway gallery of the Kenneth and Jeanine Dobbins River Campus Center, according to a university news release.
An artist reception is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. May 1, which will coincide with the art faculty exhibition in the Crisp II Museum and with downtown Cape Girardeau's First Friday events, the release stated.
"I love Chinese painting and calligraphy, which bring me a lot of fun in my daily life," Yue said in the release. "When confronted with natural mountains and rivers and trees, I feel lighthearted and have an impulse to paint and to share them with my friends. Chinese painting and calligraphy is one of my best friends."
Yue has been a university teacher of art for nine years. He is an associate professor at Chang'an University in Xi'an, China, according to the release.
He received his doctoral degree in fine arts from the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts.
His major research field is art history, specifically calligraphic art of statue preface in China's Northern Dynasties, the release stated.
He has hosted a national foundation of social science project titled "The Regional Styles and Their Comparative Study of Statue Inscription Calligraphy of the Northern Dynasties," a project of the Ministry of Education titled "Calligraphy of Wei Tablets in Guanzhong District of the Northern Dynasties -- Calligraphy of Chang'an Style" and four other projects about art history, according to the release.
He has published seven research papers and six books.
He is a member of the Shaanxi Calligrapher Association and a member of the Shaanxi Artist Association.
He is engaged in the practical activity of Chinese painting and calligraphy of Wei Steles.
His calligraphic and painting works have been exhibited in museums, and he continues to create new works, the release stated.
