Giant City State Park has been called "The Outdoorsman's Paradise." Known for its unique terrain and long list of outdoor options, it lives up to its reputation time and time again. South of Carbondale, the 4,000-acre park attracts over 1 million visitors annually and truly offers something for everyone interested in exploring nature.

For those who love to hike, Giant City offers many distinct trails that lead visitors through the maze of the Shawnee Forest. Brushing against the famous stone bluffs, the trails present a combination of well-defined paths and hidden surprises. Whether it's the short and scenic Post Oak Trail or the physically challenging Red Cedar Trail (16 miles), hikers are sure to enjoy the view Giant City has to offer.

For those wanting to "get off their feet," the park also features a number of equestrian trails. Horse rental and guided group tours are available.

Giant City also offers a wide range of activities for the outdoor sportsman. Little Grassy Lake, located on the East side of the park, is perfect for canoeing and provides plenty of opportunities for the avid fisherman. The steep overhangs of the park's rocky bluffs make rappelling a popular pastime, and hunting is also allowed on a controlled basis. Check with the park office for specific details.

Regardless of what activities are chosen in the outdoors, a trip to Giant City State Park wouldn't be complete without an indoor stop at the Giant City Lodge. The lodge is known not only for its rustic architecture, but also its wonderful food. The dining room serves breakfast, lunch and diner, and is famous for its family-style meals. The lodge also features a bar, lounge and a sheltered swimming pool.

Another unique attraction of the park stands outside the lodge. An 82-foot water tower with an observation deck gives visitors an overall view of the hills and valleys waiting to be explored beneath.
