The St. Louis Contors will be performing live at Port Cape on Saturday, January 18 from 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM. The St. Louis Contors is a ten-piece band formed in 1962. It has a full sound, thanks to a powerful four-member saxophone section and three vocalists. The three-piece rhythm section of guitar, bass guitar, and drums fills out the group. The band was originally eight members and, incredibly, four of the original musicians are still with the group. When the band formed in 1962, the Motown sound was new and popular nation- wide. The Contors was the first St. Louis area band to break the color barrier with three African American singers.
The powerful sound includes great Motown hits from artists such as The Temptation, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Sam Cook, James Brown, The Drifter, Wilson Picket, and many more. The song list could have come from the Billboard Magazine hits of the 1960s with titles such as Under the Boardwalk, Up On The Roof, Woman's Got Soul, Hitchhike, Getting' Ready, The Way You Do The Things You Do, C.O.D., I Feel Good (I've Got You), Dock Of The Bay, Stand By Me, Unchain My Heart, Mustang Sally, I Wish It Would Rain, Tossin' and Turnin', ad infiniturn.
The Contors were all young men when the band was formed in 1962. The youngest, Tom Mogelnicki, was only fourteen years old at the time. Tom is now an independent contractor in Cape Girardeau. Tenor Saxophonist Bob Bierman played with Ike and Tina Turner during their St. Louis days. The lead saxophonist, Rick Kerry, is a dentist in Florissant. Other members of the band have "day jobs" ranging from plumbing contractor, chiropractor, airline supervisor, registered nurse, schoolteacher, and city official. While the careers of the band members are diverse, their love and dedication to authentic Motown music has remained a constant and common commitment through the years.
