After gaining ground with hits like Here in your Bedroom and Superman, Goldfinger is still plugging away at the public. Never stopping to breathe but always fun to be around, their stage presence is nothing more than their everyday presence in real life. To interview them in an average setting is like getting a show in itself. Here Goldfinger lead singer John Feldman and bass player Charlie Paulson talk about the art of disguise, what it takes to be a Superman and future plans for the group.
OFF!- So, when is the arraignment hearing for the show you just did?
Charlie- Um, I think after we're done eating, a diversion has been created for us already, and we have costumes ready. We'll be dressing up as the Rams Cheerleaders.
John- Actually, we're Slipknot.
OFF!- Well, I have noticed that I've never seen you guys in the same place at the same time.
John- Our new name will be the St. Louis Slipknot Cheerleaders.
OFF!- So, how long have you guys been around?
Charlie- Six years.
John- We got together in February of '94. Our first show was in October of '94 at the GasLight. Than we played the New Years Eve at the Whisky and we've played every New years eve there since.
Charlie- Yeah, that New Years Eve ,we were the first of, like, 10 bands, and we went on at like 4 o'clock in the afternoon for approximately two people and not one of the bands that went on after us is still around today.
OFF!- Did you guys even imagine it coming to this?
Charlie- I think most musicians start doing what they do at an early age, and if you stick with it, it'll take you were it wants to. It seems. We've been really fortunate. Our lives defiantly don't suck, but we've worked our a#@ off to have what we have. I mean, I know a lot of guys out there that just go and get a bunch of tattoos and stop there. That just blows my mind.
OFF!- Do you guys prefer to play in smaller clubs than something like Riverport?
Charlie- Over all, we prefer small clubs, but there's something about getting up in front of several thousand people. There's definitely an electricity there that you don't get in small clubs.
OFF!- So, Do you guys have a preference of New York or LA?
Charlie- They're absolutely two totally different animals. I never spent more than four days in New York at one time, but I've never gotten sick of it. I've always thought I could spend a lot of time there.
OFF!- So, what's next for Goldfinger?
John- We go on tour in Europe in September and do a bunch of European festivals. 99 Red Balloons will probably be the next single, and hopefully, tour until the end of the year.
Charlie- And of all this hinges on the out come of our drummer's colon transplant.
