The Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Recital Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus housed a chapel when the building was a seminary. The original stained glass windows and vaulted ceilings combine with new acoustical engineering and a computerized lighting system to provide an intimate aural and visual experience unlike anything Cape Girardeau has ever had before.
At Brandt Hall on the main campus, most student recitals were presented in the choir rehearsal room, which looks like a classroom. "It was very difficult to create a true performance setting," said Dr. Christopher Goeke, chairman of the Department of Music.
He said the students and faculty are excited about the possibilities provided by Shuck Recital Hall. The hall has a stage, tiered seating, a backstage area and a green room where performers can get organized before going on the stage. "It really becomes much more of a theatrical venue," Goeke said.
Old St. Vincent's Church, where many faculty recitals previously were held, is a beautiful setting, Goeke said, but lacks the intimacy of Shuck Recital Hall.
Adjunct professor and pianist Tyson Wunderlich had the honor of playing the initial recital at the Shuck last week. A student recital also was held.
The Southeast Baroque Ensemble performs at 7:30 tonight. The ensemble's lineup will include Paul Thompson, Baroque flute; Dr. Brandon Christensen, Baroque violin; Dr. Sara Edgerton, Baroque cello and viola da gamba; and Dr. Gary Miller, harpsichord; and guest performer Dr. Jeff Noonan, theorbo.
