River City Players show a little 'Faith' in latest performance

The first show of the season for the River City Players fits snugly in the South and promises to provide a night of laughs and entertainment.

The show, "Faith County," opens tonight at Port Cape. It's an all-ages comedy set in the Faith County fairgrounds in Mineola and written by Landon Mark Smith.

"It's a town lost in time, back when the beehive hairdos were still the rage and the nearby tractor pull in Pickler is a big thing," said Andrea Shovan, who directs the play.

The play shows the lives of a few interesting Mineolans at the fair. In includes love interests and a lot of gossip.

"Everybody can relate with at least one character; it's a lot of fun," Shovan said. "It's an absolutely hysterical show with a hysterical cast."

Seven of the nine-person cast are new to the RCP stage.

Shovan said being a part of the River City Players starts with auditions and is based on acting, but extends beyond that.

"We're always looking for new people, and if they don't want to be on the stage, there is lots of behind the scenes stuff," she said.

"Costumes, makeup, set building, passing out tickets; all that fun stuff."

This is the River City Players' first production of the year, but there are two more plays in the works, one for August and another in October.

The August show is going to be "Acadamia Nuts" with Mike Craig directing, and "Get It Right" will be the October show, directed by Joe Reed.

Auditions will be held in June for "Acadamia Nuts" and in August for "Get It Right."

The performance of "Faith County" will be in the Yacht Club at Port Cape Girardeau. The dinner shows will be today and Saturday, and May 13 and 14.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $30.

A Mother's Day dessert matinee will be at 2 p.m. May 8.
