Meryl Streep is quite possibly the greatest actress of her generation. She can literally do everything — from the dramatic pathos of "The Hours" to the black comedy of "Death Becomes Her," she's an actress of incredible range and talent. And in "Mamma Mia!" she is able to shine yet again.
"Mamma Mia!" is the movie version of one of the most popular Broadway musicals of the last few years. The story is simple — a girl's search for her father. But it is told using pop songs by ABBA, the Swedish super group from the 1970s and '80s. From the show-stopping "Dancing Queen" to the melancholy "The Winner Takes It All," every song featured was a hit for the band.
"Mamma Mia!" is not a serious film, and anyone going in expecting it to be will be let down. The movie is as fun and light as the songs it features. The entire cast performs well, both acting and singing. Streep is able to showcase her underused vocal talents and, as expected, she does a fine job. Amanda Seyfried, best known as one of The Plastics in "Mean Girls," ably holds her own as Streep's daughter. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard are featured as the three potential fathers, while Christine Baranski and Julie Walters steal practically every scene they're in as Streep's two best friends.
The star of the film is undoubtedly the songs. Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus crafted some of the most sublime pop songs of all time, and they still hold up today. Don't be surprised to hear people singing along during some of the more well known numbers. And the story each song tells fits perfectly into the storyline, with few alterations to the original lyrics.
Not matter what your final opinion of the film, you'll find it hard not to leave the theater dancing.
