These are the 10 songs George Dordoni of Cape Girardeau wouldn't want to live without:
1. "No Woman No Cry" -- Bob Marley and the Wailers
I love the soothing message, the reminiscences that remind me of home, and that the song is easy to play and sing.
2. "Redemption Song" -- Bob Marley
The song has an inspired message.
3. "Nowhere Man" -- The Beatles
The song evokes great feelings of the '60s, and my 6-year-old son loves to sing it with me while I play guitar.
4. "Singasong" -- Earth Wind and Fire
The message of the power of music to uplift is inspiring and fun, and the horns and great vocals make it impossible to resist!
5. "Sense of Purpose" -- Third World
This song has meaning to my wife and me because we met the resistance of some friends as we started our life together. We hung in there despite the antagonism because we realized our "sense of purpose."
6. "Throne of Gold" -- Steel Pulse
This great reggae song makes any couple in love feel like royalty!
7. "Aicha" -- Khaled
This is a beautiful, romantic love song sung in Arabic and French.
8. "Falanana Bambin" -- unknown
This is an Italian lullaby that my mom used to sing to me, and now I sing it to my kids when they need comfort. "Nella brazzi della mama, falanana, falanana."
9. "El Aguacero" -- Ricardo Lemva y Makina Loca
A fantastic mambo, with a double entendre about a coming thunderstorm. I love to practice congas to this rhythm, makes me feel homesick for Miami.
10. Horn Concerto No. 2 in D -- Richard Strauss
The guy who wrote "Thus Spake Zarathustra" wrote this amazing virtuoso piece for horn and orchestra, with delightful slips and dips and incredible leaps. Any horn player who can master this piece is imbued with genius!
Or as an alternative No. 10: "Rag Jogiya" -- Ravi Shankar. This Indian classical piece sweeps you away with sensuous yearning and beauty when Ravi Shankar plays it on sitar. When I practice sitar, I love to think of the pure inspiration of this kind of piece.
