The holidays conjure up all sorts of traditions. Stockings hung with care, presents under the tree, our favorite movies on TV.
The classics like "Miracle on 34th Street" and "A Christmas Story" will always be available. SE Live asked six local art and music movers and shakers to share their favorite cinematic indulgence for the holidays. It didn't have to be a Christmas movie or even a movie they watch every year, just one that represented the holiday season for that person.
Here you'll find the favorite holidayish flicks from a few of our favorite artish folks
Artist and art teacher at Cape Girardeau Central High
"White Christmas," this was a family favorite at my house growing up, and it still is to this day.
Favorite quote: Phil to Bob: "When what's left of you gets around to what's left to be gotten, what's left to be gotten won't be worth getting, whatever it is you've got left."
Singer and guitarist for Headly Grange
"Home Alone" because it's a classic. Brings back good memories and it's still funny as hell.
Favorite quote: "Look what ya did, ya little jerk!" -- Uncle Frank
Singer and guitarist for Thorlock
I really like "Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2" because it's so awful it helps put reality in perspective for me.
Favorite quote: The best quote of the movie is: "GARBAGE DAY!"
Professor of theater and dance
I'm going to have to go with 1974's "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" when, during the Black Plague in answer to the declarative "Bring out your dead," one of the supposed deceased raises his head and says, "I'm not dead yet." That's always a pretty good sentiment any time of year!
Guitarist and vocalist for Powder Mill Band
"Sling Blade" on account of their family dynamic that is reminiscent of our own. And the band rehearsal scene with Christmas lights for stage lighting.
Favorite quote: "Don't talk to me like that when I'm hurtin' Linda." Doyle
Cape Girardeau photographer and cinematographer
The classic 1947 Samuel Goldwyn film "The Bishop's Wife." I believe it's the perfect holiday film mainly for its joyous story.
Favorite quote: Cary Grant and Loretta Young have gone ice skating and included their jolly, salt of the earth cab driver, Sylvester.
When Sylvester drops the couple at their door, he won't take any money. As the cab rolls away, Grant turns to Young and says, knowingly, "Sylvester is a noble soul. His children and his children's children will rise up and call him blessed."
