"The Debt" is a dour spy thriller that serves up very few surprises, though it does deliver two strong performances: by the priceless Helen Mirren and this summer's new hot actress, Jessica Chastain.
Mirren and Chastain play the same character, Rachel Singer. Chastain portrays Rachel in 1966, as a rookie agent for Israel's spy agency Mossad on a mission to grab an East Berlin doctor (Jesper Christensen) wanted for conducting experiments on Jews in the Nazi concentration camps. Mirren portrays Rachel in 1997, when a dark secret regarding that mission is in danger of being revealed.
